April 24, 2024 - International League (IL)
Charlotte Knights News Release
(ALLENTOWN, PA) -- With the game tied at 3-3 in the top of the fifth inning, Charlotte shortstop Colson Montgomery changed the game with one swing of the bat.
Montgomery launched a solo home run to break the 3-3 tie and help lead the Charlotte Knights to a 5-3 win over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Wednesday night in game two of the six-game series from Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, PA.
After starting out the season at 2-9, the Knights have gone 8-3 over their last 11 games. On the season, Wednesday's win improved the club's record to 10-12 overall.
Ranked as the number one prospect in the Chicago White Sox system, Montgomery has played his best offensive games on the road so far this season. The 22-year-old homered in back-to-back games during Charlotte's last road trip through Jacksonville. On Wednesday, Montgomery launched his third home run of the season in the top of the fifth inning to break a 3-3 tie. The Knights later tacked on one more run along the way to hold on for the victory.
Charlotte RHP Jake Woodford (1-1, 9.61) started Wednesday's game and earned the win after he put together five solid innings. Woodford allowed three runs and fanned five to notch his first win of the season. Once again, the Charlotte bullpen was outstanding. A total of three relievers combined to hold the IronPigs scoreless over the final four innings of the game. RHP Lane Ramsey pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his first save of the season.
Other offensive stars for the Knights on Wednesday included Zach DeLoach and Tommy Pham, who both drove in runs in the top of the third inning. Pham singled home Lenyn Sosa and DeLoach drove home two on a single. Rafael Ortega also had a solid day at the plate. He had two hits and two stolen bases in the game two win.
The Knights will continue the six-game road series against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Triple-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies) on Thursday from Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, PA. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad will have the call on www.CharlotteKnights.com beginning at 6:40 p.m. First pitch is set for 6:45 p.m. on Thursday evening.
