Red Claws Top BayHawks in OT Thriller

Erie, PA - The Maine Red Claws, presented by Unum, saw a 21-point deficit erased, but rallied for a thrilling overtime victory, 130-128 over the Erie Bayhawks Wednesday night.

Maine (14-22) won in overtime for the first time this season (1-4). The Red Claws had four players score 20+ points, led by Archie Goowdin, who scored 27 points including the game-winner in OT on 12-18 shooting. Andrew White scored 22 points for Maine, Vitto Brown added 21, and Sheldon Jeter finished with 20 for the second straight game. R.J. Hunter added 17 points and 7 assists, while Jeff Roberson scored 14. John Bohannon grabbed 14 rebounds in the victory.

Erie (17-18) had to prolific performances, with Alex Poythress scoring 41 points and grabbing 18 rebounds. Terrence Jones added 34 points and 15 rebounds in the loss.

Brown started the scoring with a big slam. Poythress answered with a straight-on three. Bohannon's three-point play tied the game at 7. Brown heated up from the outside, scoring 8 of Maine's first 13 points. Goodwin's three tied the game at 20, and his alley-oop dunk from Trey Davis gave the Claws the lead. Maine extended to a 7 point lead, but Isaac Humphries' three at the end of the quarter gave the Red Claws a 30-26 lead after 1.

In the 2nd, the Claws opened on a 11-0 run to extend to a 12-point lead. Roberson scored 5 straight points to extend the run to 13-0 and give Maine a 43-26 lead. Jaylen Morris' dunk helped stop the bleeding for the Bayhawks. Goodwin drained a three to make it 53-36. Sheldon Jeter knocked in a trey to extend the lead to 21 points. The Red Claws led at the half, 60-44. Maine shot 52% (24-46) from the floor in the first half, including 32% (7-22) from three-point range, while Erie shot just 33% (18-55) from the field, and 16% (3-19) from beyond the arc.

Hunter opened the 3rd by scoring 5 quick points. Erie would go on a run to get back in the game, scoring 11 points to Hunter's 5, and Terrence Jones' lay-up cut it to 10 at 65-55. Brown made the lead 13 again with a deep three. Still, the Bayhawks weren't done. Poythress buried a three to cut it to 6 at 74-68. Poythress slammed one home late in the period to cut it to 4. Roberson hit a big three at the end of the quarter to make it 87-80 Red Claws after 3.

In the 4th, White knocked in a three to get the lead back to 10 at 95-85. Humphries' three-point play cut it back to 4, but Davis answered with a floating jumper. White hit another three to extend the lead, and Goodwin's lay-in made it 102-91. Erie got it back to 6, but Maine scored 6 quick points, capped by a Jeter three, to make it 117-105. Erie then scored 8 straight to get it back to 4. The Bayhawks cut it to 1 point, and Morris jammed home a dunk with :48.1 left to tie the game at 122. With :01.2 left, Jeter missed a contested three, and the game went to OT. Erie out-scored Maine 42-35 in the 4th quarter, and 78-62 in the half.

Poythress gave Erie a 124-122 lead with a tap-in to start the overtime period. Goodwin's slam tied the game with :57.8 to go. Jeter hit a huge three to put Maine up 127-124 with :24.6 left. Poythress scored to make it a 1 point game. Maine then turned it over with :14.1 left. Jones scooped in a lay-up to take a 128-127 lead with :04.7 to go. On the ensuing possession, Goodwin drove and scored, plus the foul, to put Maine up 130-128 with :01.9 left. A long three to win it at the buzzer fell short, and Maine won its first OT game of the season.

Maine finished up shooting 48% (48-101) from the field, 38% (18-47) from three-point range, and 16-19 from the free throw line. Erie shot 47% (50-106) from the floor, 26% (10-38) from beyond the arc, and 18-29 from the charity stripe.
