South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, S.C. - The South Carolina Stingrays returned to the North Charleston Coliseum for the first time in two weeks, but it was well worth the wait for fans. Matt Reid scored two goals, and T.J. McElroy had three assists, as the Stingrays defeated the Johnstown Chiefs 5-2.
"I thought we got off to a slow start. We didn't have the jump we had against Augusta," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "But once we got going, we played well here tonight."
The Rays got on the board early for the second straight night. Reid scored his 9th goal of the season from Scott Romfo and Marty Guerin, on the power play at 8:18. Johnstown tied the game up on a power play goal of their own by Ryan Garlock at 17:13, and took the lead in the final minute of play on Kenny Roche's 2nd goal of the season.
In the second period the Stingrays began to take control. Matt Reid scored his 2nd goal of the night, his 10th of the season, on the power play, from Matt Scherer and McElroy at 11:19. Eight minutes later it was Scherer getting his 3rd goal of the season, from McElroy at 19:18.
The Rays put an exclamation point on the win in the third period, scoring another two goals. Steve Pinizzotto got his 7th goal of the season from Stephen Werner and Trent Campbell at 6:10 to make it 4-2. At 15:18 Travis Morin put back a rebound for his 11th goal of the year from McElroy.
The winning goaltender was Davis Parley who stopped 28 of the 30 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Andrew Penner who stopped 28 of 33 shots he faced. The Rays went 2 for 5 on the power play, while killing off 4 of the 5 short handed situations they faced.
The Rays take on the Chiefs tomorrow afternoon for the final time this season. Game time will be at 4:05. It will be the last time the Rays play for 9 days, so make sure to come on out and support your Rays.
