Cincinnati Cyclones News Release

CINCINNATI - A four goal second period rally for the Cincinnati Cyclones was wasted in a 5-4 shootout loss to Elmira on Saturday night. Rookie Tyler Howells netted a pair of goal in the frame to launch the Cincinnati rally that wiped out a 2-0 deficit, but a pair of Jackals goals in the third forced the overtime session.

Elmira scored twice in the first period, as Bryan Rodney netted his third goal of the season at 10:29 of the frame. Rodney let loose a rising shot from the left point that went into the top corner of the Cyclones net. That goal came six seconds after a Jackals power play had expired. The lead went to 2-0, as Pierre-Luc Faubert collected his eighth goal at 18:44.

Cincinnati responded with four second period goals, its first such output of the season, to erase the deficit and open a 4-2 edge. Tyler Howells netted his third and fourth goals a little more than six minutes apart to knot the game at 2-2 with 9:49 to play. Barret Ehgoetz had assists on both of the tallies. At 15:06 of the frame, right wing Jean-Michel Daoust ripped his 13th goal of the season over the shoulder of Joel Martn from the top of the right circle. Cory Urquhart and Matt Macdonald added the assists. With 1:07 remaining in the period, the Cyclones squeezed out a few more sparks when Gerard Miller scored a near carbon copy of Daoust's goal, his third of the season as Thomas Beauregard and Scott Reynolds assisted on the score.

Cyclones forward Jimmy Bonneau may have provided the biggest sparks of the second period, fighting with Bruce Watson in the first seconds of the frame and the having a tussel with Frank Littlejohn seconds after the fourth goal of the stanza.

Elmira rallied with a pair of goals in the third period, as Joe Grimaldi added his second goal at 5:46 and Bryan Rodney picked up a power play goal at 13:49 to force the extra session. The Jackals outshot Cincinnati, 11-3, in the frame.

Following a scoreless overtime, Elmira got shootout scores from Scott May and Rodney to seal the win.

Cyclones goaltender Dov Grumet-Morris had his record drop to 9-2-1 on the season and had his eight game winning streak end. Grumet-Morris has not lost in regulation time since Nov. 4 at Dayton in a 3-2 defeat.

The Cyclones are next in action on Friday night against Johnstown at 7:30pm.

The Cyclones are 15-5-2, co-leaders of the North Division. Elmira gains a share of the division lead with a 15-6-2 slate on the year. The Cyclones have their best 22-game record in team history, a full two and a half games better than the 2002-03 edition of the club which advanced to the National Conference finals before being eliminated by Atlantic City, the eventual Kelly Cup champions.

The showdown for first place in the North Division ended with each team claiming a shootout win and each team taking three points in the standings on the weekend.
