Rampage Top Amerks 3-2 in Shootout for Sixth Straight Win

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Feb. 21, 2013) - The San Antonio Rampage (23-21-3-5) won their sixth in a row as they topped the Rochester Americans (26-18-3-4) in a shootout 3-2 Friday night inside Blue Cross Arena. With the win, the Rampage have points in 16 of their last 17 games.

Quinton Howden scored his eighth goal and third shorthanded goal of the year to open the scoring for the Rampage, and Joey Crabb added the remaining regulation tally to send the game into extra sessions. Crabb earned the Second Star of the Game for his efforts. Bobby Butler and Vincent Trocheck converted in the skills competition to put it away for the Rampage.

Michael Houser shined, stopping 23-of-25 in regulation, and 4-of-5 in the shootout.

With his fourth goal in his last three games, Phil Varone made it 1-0 for the Amerks in the first period. Picking up a feed from Luke Adam down low, Varone tipped it just over Houser's blocker 3:38 into the opening frame.

The Rampage would have three straight power play opportunities, but were unable to convert, and the Amerks took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

Howden would change that halfway through the second period. The former Florida first round draft pick streaked into the zone alongside Ryan Martindale, and backhanded a shorthanded beauty past Rochester netminder Nathan Lieuwen to even it up at one.

Howden is responsible for half of the Rampage's shorthanded goals this season. Martindale now has assists in his last two games, and the goal gives Howden 11 points (4g-7a) in his last 15 games, including a goal and an assist in his last two.

Rochester answered late, making it 2-1 with 19 seconds left on the clock. Adam picked up his second assist on the night, feeding Brayden McNabb at the right circle on the power play. McNabb wasted no time in one-timing it past Houser for the go-ahead goal to end the middle frame.

Varone added the secondary assist on McNabb's seventh of the year, as the trio teamed up for a second time to lead the Amerks offense.

The Rampage tied it up once again 3:41 into the third, just seconds after their power play expired. Trocheck gathered a pass from Alex Petrovic, and fired one in from the half boards that fought its way through traffic and made it 2-2. Crabb earned the official nod on the tally, tipping it in past Lieuwen for his ninth of the year.

The assist gives Trocheck two points (1g-1a) in his last two, and 10 points (3g-7a) in his last 12, while Crabb has 12 points (6g-6a) in his last 18 games.

Crabb's tally would stand, sending the game into overtime. Both teams exchanged power plays, but neither could convert, and the shootout was needed to decide the game's fate.

After getting chances throughout the game, Butler finally found the back of the net, and Trocheck's shootout marker sealed the deal as the Rampage won it 3-2.

The Rampage went 0-for-6 on the power play, while Rochester went 1-for-4. San Antonio owned the shot battle 28-25.

The Rampage will travel to Ontario for afternoon tilts with the Toronto Marlies (Saturday) and the Hamilton Bulldogs (Sunday) before closing out the Rodeo Road Trip inside the Memorial Auditorium in Central New York as they take on the Utica Comets for the first time this year on Wednesday (Feb. 26).
