Offence Keeps Firing as IceCaps Blast Sharks

February 21, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
St. John's IceCaps News Release

Carl Klingberg's two goals were all the IceCaps would need as St. John's defeated Worcester 5-1 Friday night at the DCU Center in Worcester, MA.

Klingberg potted a pair of first period markers to set the tone for the visitors, who also got goals from Jason Jaffray, Blair Riley and Kyle MacKinnon. Zach Redmond and Jordan Hill each had a pair of assists while Michael Hutchinson picked up the victory with 33 saves.

St. John's opened the scoring at 13:47 of the first on Klingberg's 14th of the season. Eric O'Dell made a beautiful move to split the defence and slipped a pass over to Klingberg, who chipped it past Sharks netminder Troy Grosenick to make it 1-0.

Klingberg notched his second of the period minutes later to put his team up 2-0. Redmond's shot from the right point was stopped by Grosenick but the rebound kicked right to Klingberg, who slammed in his 15th to give the visitors a two-goal advantage.

Early in the second, the IceCaps extended their lead to three. Redmond threw a cross-ice feed to Gordon, who slap-passed to Jaffray in front for the redirection and a 3-0 St. John's lead.

Worcester got one back on a power play after a hooking minor to Klingberg. Sena Acolatse faked a slap shot and wristed the puck through traffic and past Hutchinson to cut the lead to 3-1.

The IceCaps restored their three-goal advantage at 8:02 of the second on a nice goal by Riley. The B.C. native muscled towards the goal from the left side and protected the puck from a Sharks defender before snapping a shot over the blocker of Grosenick.

Minutes later the visitors kept piling it on. Brenden Kichton took a pass at the right point and made a beautiful tape-to-tape feed to a wide-open MacKinnon, who buried a shot from the slot to cap the scoring.

The two teams will meet again Saturday night at the DCU Center (8:30 PM NT). Catch all the action with broadcaster Brian Rogers at www.stjohnsicecaps.com and 930 AM, or watch online at www.ahllive.com. Pregame show begins at 8:00.
