SAN ANTONIO - Steven Goertzen scored his first goal since joining the San Antonio Rampage in a trade-deadline deal, but the Chicago Wolves came away with a 3-1 decision in a dogfight that followed suit with the evening's theme.

As the Rampage celebrated the first of its kind Pucks and Paws Night in front of 6,516 fans and their "best friends" at the AT&T Center, the teams combined to amass over 100 penalty minutes, including two full-on brawls.

The Rampage (36-23-3-7, 82 points) blasted 18 of their 39 shots on goal in the first period, to just eight for Chicago, but the game remained scoreless heading into the second frame behind terrific goaltending from Wolves netminder Ondrej Pavelec and a heap of luck.

The Rampage had opportunities, the best of which came when Pavelec was rendered helpless on the ice, leaving his net wide open, but defenseman Karel Pilar stepped in the way of an oncoming shot.

Nonetheless, the Rampage set the tone in the opening frame, and carried that momentum into the second period.

Steven Goertzen, acquired Feb. 26 from Syracuse, scored his first goal with the Rampage to put them on top 7:31 into the second period. He put the wrister through from the slot, with the assist from Cam Paddock.

The Rampage were forced short-handed for nearly seven minutes because of the second big skirmish of the game. Chicago took advantage and evened things up with a power-play goal from the American Hockey League's leading scorer, Jason Krog, at 12:59 of the second stanza.

Chicago tallied once more before the end of period, with a marker from left wing Colin Stuart for a 2-1 lead. Chicago tacked on a goal from right wing Darren Haydar, last season's MVP, for the final score.

The Rampage are in third of the AHL West Division, but just two points behind second-place Rockford (37-23-4-6, 84 points) with a game up on the IceHogs. The teams will meet in two weeks at Rockford.

The Rampage play host to I-10 rival Houston tomorrow afternoon in a 5 p.m. Sunday matinee. The Rampage hold a three-point lead on Houston for the fifth spot in the West Division, which currently occupies the final playoff spot in the conference.
