San Antonio Rampage News Release
CLEVELAND, Ohio (March 26, 2009) - Chad Kolarik teamed up with Brett MacLean and Kevin Porter to score two goals including the game winner as San Antonio beat Lake Erie 5-4 at Quicken Loans Arena on Thursday night.
During a physical first period that saw the teams combine for 49 penalty minutes, the Rampage were able to capitalize on their 15-4 shot advantage. San Antonio tallied the period's only score when David Spina showed some nice stick-handling with a wraparound goal from in front of the net. The power-play goal was his 16th of the season and gave San Antonio a 1-0 lead at the 16:08 mark of the first.
If the first was aggressive, the second was offensive. The Rampage and Monsters combined for five goals in a back and forth second frame. First, the Monsters tied it up with Chris Durno's 15th goal 5:37 into the period. But San Antonio answered just twelve seconds later when Simon Ferguson took a Lake Erie turnover and banged home his fourth goal of the season for a 2-1 Rampage lead.
After Lake Erie was unsuccessful on a power play, Nigel Williams made it moot seconds later beating Karl Goehring five-hole to tie the game at 2-2 at the 8:54 mark.
However, the Rampage answered on the very next shift for the second time of the night when Joel Perrault gave San Antonio a 3-2 lead thirteen seconds later. Perrault beat Monsters goalie Jason Bacashihua but the puck caught the post and came off spinning like a top as it just snuck over the goal line.
Bacashihua had not given up a goal in thirty-two minutes of action versus San Antonio until tonight.
Late in the period, San Antonio extended their lead thanks to some great work by Frank Lessard to keep the puck in the offensive zone. The puck eventually found its way to Kolarik who blistered his 16th goal of the season from the right face-off dot past Bacashihua for a 4-2 lead with just under a minute and a half remaining in the period.
The action continued in the third when Lake Erie's Mike McLean struck at the 2:30 mark to cut the deficit to 4-3. However, Kolarik tallied his second goal of the night at 7:21 to cushion the lead back to two. Both of Kolarik's goals came with assists from Kevin Porter and Brett MacLean.
Lake Erie wasn't done. Five minutes later, Ray Macias again sliced the lead in half as the defenseman netted only his second goal of the season to close the lead to 5-4. But the Rampage used a 6 for 6 night on the penalty kill and held on to win their third game in their last four outings.
Goerhing got the win in his second straight start after giving up six goals in a 6-1 loss Tuesday in Hamilton.
Tonight's game was the first of three straight in three different cities. San Antonio goes to New York to face Syracuse on Friday and returns home for a Saturday night matchup with Rockford.
Saturday's meeting with Rockford is Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Night. America's Sweethearts will be in town hosting a dance clinic, meet and greet and will perform during both intermissions on ice at the Rampage hockey game.
