March 26, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Hamilton Bulldogs News Release

HAMILTON, ON - The Hamilton Bulldogs are proud to announce that forward Ben Maxwell has been named the team's winner of the American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the Hamilton community during the 2008-2009 season.

Maxwell, a 20-year-old native of North Vancouver, British Columbia, was an active member of his community in junior and he has continued to be involved in the community while playing in his first professional hockey season. This year in conjunction with the Bulldogs Foundation, Maxwell helped execute new educational programs at schools in the Hamilton area such as "Agree to Read", "Bulldogs Ambassadors" and "Going for Goals". Maxwell was enthusiastically involved in getting students to participate in these programs. During his free time, Maxwell visited the schools where he stressed the importance of school and reaching your goals through assemblies and visiting individual classrooms. Following the completion of the programs, Maxwell insisted on returning to the schools to personally hand out rewards and prizes to the students who fulfilled their requirements and completed their goals.

At the Bulldogs' traditional Christmas visit to the McMaster Children's Hospital, Maxwell and his teammates interacted with the children and sang Christmas carols. Maxwell was also involved with "Casino Night", the largest fundraiser during the season for the Bulldogs Foundation, where he was actively taking part in casino games with the attendants of the event, signing autographs and taking pictures with fans.

Maxwell is now one of 29 finalists for the AHL's 2008-2009 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, honoring the overall American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year. The league award is named after the former Hershey Bears forward and AHL All-Star who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia. The winner of the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award will be announced by the AHL in the coming weeks.
