Penner Named P-Bruins American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year

March 26, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Providence Bruins News Release

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins, in their 17th season in the American Hockey League, announced today that defenseman Jeff Penner has been named the team's representative for the American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year award, given to one player from each AHL club for his outstanding contributions to his local community and charitable organizations during the 2008-09 season.

Penner, 21, is in his first full professional season and he has transitioned to the pro game seamlessly both on and off the ice. On the ice, the rookie ranks second among P-Bruins defensemen with 10 goals and 27 points while appearing in all 71 of the team's games. Off the ice, Penner has been a fixture in the Rhode Island community at several public appearances. Always quick to volunteer for team-scheduled appearances around Providence, Penner also takes it upon himself to make frequent independent visits to Hasbro Children's Hospital. He has also partnered with the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rhode Island, where he has become a role model for a young boy, who he visits with weekly.

Representatives from American Specialty and the AHL will choose among Penner and the other 28 finalists for the winner of this year's Yanick Dupre Memorial Award. The AHL's annual Man of the Year award is named after the late Yanick Dupre, who died in 1997 at the age of 24, following a 16-month battle with leukemia. Dupre, an AHL All-Star in 1995, played four seasons with the Hershey Bears, registering 169 points in 207 games. He also skated in 35 National Hockey League games with the Philadelphia Flyers.

The winner of the 2008-09 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award will be announced in the coming weeks.

Providence Bruins season tickets, Flex Tix packages and single game tickets are on sale now for the 2008-09 season. To purchase tickets or to learn more information, call the P-Bruins ticket office at (401) 273-5000 or log on to the team website at providencebruins.com.
