Zingoni Named Norfolk Admirals' 2008-09 American Specialty/AHL Man Of The Year

NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk Admirals are proud to announce that forward Pete Zingoni has been named the team's winner of the American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the Hampton Roads community during the 2008-09 season.
Throughout the season, Zingoni has focused his time and energy on children - striving to be a good role model and positive influence to our area's youth. With a natural ability to relate to children, Zingoni devoted his off-ice time to promoting literacy, good sportsmanship and education. Zingoni visited schools throughout Hampton Roads and used the sport of hockey to teach geography, math, science and healthy lifestyle choices.
Zingoni promoted the Norfolk Admirals' All Star Reading Program in the Hampton Roads area throughout the season. Zingoni celebrated with winning classrooms, bringing pizza and achievement certificates to the students to reward their accomplishments. During January's Literacy Month, Zingoni participated in numerous school reading programs, sharing hockey-related children's books with hundreds of students and always taking the time to converse individually with the students. Zingoni's message always stressed the importance of reading and education in relation to any path you choose as an adult.
As a professional athlete, Zingoni used his ability to reach area youth outside the classroom by visiting local homeless shelters and military bases. Toting boxes of books to donate to the shelters, Zingoni spent time reading and talking to the children, as well as letting them try on hockey equipment. Additionally, Zingoni took his message of literacy and fitness to local military children. Zingoni emphasized the importance of health and nutrition in the children's daily lives by participating in fitness challenges with teenagers and reading to the younger children.
In recognition of his efforts, Zingoni will be presented with an etched crystal trophy during an on-ice presentation prior to an upcoming Admirals home game.
Zingoni is now one of 29 finalists for the AHL's 2008-09 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, honoring the overall American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year. The league award is named after the former Hershey Bears forward and AHL All-Star who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia. The winner of the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award will be announced by the American Hockey League in the coming weeks.
