Binghamton Senators News Release

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Binghamton Senators are proud to announce that defenseman Matt Carkner and left wing Denis Hamel have been named the team's co-winners of the American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year award for their outstanding contributions to the Binghamton community during the 2008-09 season.

For the second straight season, Carkner and Hamel teamed up for their Making Strides Against Breast Cancer raffle. The two players dedicated much of their free time to organizing the raffle and gathering prizes from various businesses. Carkner and Hamel made numerous visits to local organizations to promote the fundraising raffle. In addition to the raffle, Carkner and Hamel have served as celebrity bartenders and organized a bowling event to raise additional funds for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.

The two players were the driving force behind a holiday gift-giving program at the Children's Home of Binghamton. Disadvantaged children provided wish lists, which consisted of both needed and wanted items. Carkner and Hamel assigned one child's wish list to a player on the Senators. Once completed, they organized the holiday party to deliver the presents and celebrate with the children.

In recognition of their efforts, Carkner and Hamel will each be presented with an etched crystal trophy during an on-ice presentation prior to an upcoming Senators home game.

Carkner and Hamel are now finalists for the AHL's 2008-09 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, honoring the overall American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year. The league award is named after the former Hershey Bears forward and AHL All-Star who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia. The winner of the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award will be announced by the American Hockey League in the coming weeks.
