Rampage Cool off the Heat 5-1

SAN ANTONIO (Jan. 7, 2014) - The San Antonio Rampage (13-20-0-3) exploded for five goals tonight in front of a crowd of 3,060 at the AT&T Center, defeating the Abbotsford Heat (23-12-1-1) 5-1. Four of the five Rampage goals came on the power play, which tied a franchise record.

Rampage goals came from John McFarland, Joey Crabb, Bobby Butler, Colby Robak, and Matt Gilroy. The final goal from Gilroy was his second in two games, giving him a three-game point streak (2g-1a). Defensemen Denny Urban and Doug Janik each had two assists on the night, while Robak and Butler both turned in two-point nights with a goal and an assist each. Jacob Markstrom made 27-of-28 saves in the win.

The Rampage went 4-for-6 on the power play, and kept the second-best power play in the league at bay, killing off all five penalties as the Heat went 0-for-5 with the extra man.

The Heat wasted no time in finding their offense, striking just 1:35 into the first period to go up 1-0. Mark Cundari picked up the puck in the high slot, and blasted it home past Markstrom for his third on the seasons. Assists on the goal came from Max Reinhart and Sven Baertschi.

Just past the midpoint of the period, the Rampage settled into their first power play opportunity of the night. With five seconds remaining on the minor penalty to Chris Breen, Doug Janik fired in a long shot from the top of the circle, and while Heat net-minder Joni Ortio stopped the initial tip chance from Jon Matsumoto, it was McFarland who crashed the net and banged it home to tie it up at one.

The equalizer was the winger's second goal of the season.

The Rampage tacked on another power play tally 4:40 into the second. Denny Urban rifled the puck in from the blue line, and it found Crabb's stick, deflecting in past Ortio for the go-ahead goal.

Crabb's fourth of the season gave the Rampage a 2-1 lead that despite two Heat power plays, went untested for the remainder of the second. Colby Robak picked up the secondary assist on the marker.

The Rampage exploded in the third period, starting with a Butler tally at 4:32. The winger forced a turnover in the Abbotsford zone and looped back around, ripping a shot past Ortio to make it 3-1. Just two minutes later, Robak unleashed a bomb of a shot from the blue line to make it 4-1 for the Rampage's third power-play goal of the night.

Gilroy iced the game at 11:54 of the third, picking up a beautiful feed down low from Vincent Trocheck and firing it from the slot for the fourth power-play goal of the night and making it final, 5-1.

Center Jon Matsumoto skated in his 500th professional game.
