January 7, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Portland Pirates News Release
St. John's, NL - Louis Domingue made 31 saves but saw his AHL unbeaten streak come to an end as the IceCaps defeated the Pirates 4-2 in St. John's. St. John's takes two of three games in the three day series against the Pirates. Lucas Lessio and Tobias Rieder scored for the Pirates in the defeat.
The Pirates opened the scoring at 14:25 of the first. Off the faceoff, Lucas Lessio took a Jordan Szwarz feed and wrapped it around the net and past Eddie Pasquale to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead. Lessio's goal was his 10th of the year, making him the third Pirate to reach double digits in goals this season. However, Ben Chiarot tied the game for the IceCaps with just 5.9 seconds left in the first with his third goal of the year, and the first ended with a 1-1 score.
St. John's took the lead just before the halfway point of regulations. Carl Klingberg slipped the puck past Louis Domingue with 10:28 left in the second to give the IceCaps a 2-1 lead. The Pirates had a chance on the power play in the waning moments of the second period, but were unable to convert and the IceCaps took a 2-1 lead into the third.
Alex Gordon's 12th goal of the year extended the IceCaps' lead to 3-1 with 16:15 left in regulation, but the Pirates' leading rookie scorer got one back. Tobias Rieder handled a pass from Brett Hextall and beat Pasquale with 13:36 left in the third to bring the Pirates within 1. Brandon Gormley picked up an assist as well on Rieder's 11th of the season. With 2:23, the IceCaps contested a no goal call, but a review determined that Randy Jones prevented the puck from crossing the line. With the goaltender pulled and an extra attacker on, the Pirates poured shots onto Pasquale's net, but he stood on his head to keep the Pirates from tying the game, including two point blank saves on Brandon McMillan. Klingberg would ice the game for St. John's with an empty net goal with 25 seconds remaining, his second goal of the game.
Louis Domingue takes his first AHL loss after starting his career with a 7 game unbeaten streak in regulation, with his record this season dropping to 5-1-1. The Pirates fall to 14-13-1-4 and drop to 8-8-1-1 on the road this season.
The Pirates return home on Friday to face the Norfolk Admirals for the first time in Maine since 2011. Puck drop is 7 PM from the Androscoggin Bank Colisee. The Pirates are 1-0-1 against the Admirals this season, with both games coming in Norfolk. Tickets are available by calling the Androscoggin Bank Colisee box office at (207) 783-2009 ext. 525 or online at thecolisee.com.
