St. John's IceCaps News Release

ST. JOHN'S, NL - Led by a two-goal performance from Carl Klingberg and stalwart goaltending from Eddie Pasquale, the St. John's IceCaps defeated the Portland Pirates 4-2 Tuesday night at Mile One Centre.

Pasquale stopped 28-of-30 shots to earn the victory, including two at point-blank range to prevent the Pirates from tying it up in the final moments. Ben Chiarot and Andrew Gordon picked up the other tallies for the IceCaps, who took two-of-three from Portland with the win. John Albert and Jason Jaffray added two assists for St. John's.

Lucas Lessio and Tobias Rieder replied with the goals for the Pirates, while Louis Domingue turned aside 31 shots in a losing effort.

The Pirates opened the scoring at 14:25 of the opening frame, when Lessio notched his tenth of the season. Pressuring hard in the IceCaps' zone, Lessio pounced on the rebound in front of the goal and fired it blocker side past Pasquale.

While it looked like Portland would head to the locker room with a 1-0 advantage after 20 minutes, Chiarot scored with just six seconds left on the clock to even the score at a goal apiece. With time ticking down, Chiarot took the pass from Brenden Kichton before wiring a wrister through traffic that fooled Domingue glove side.

Midway through the second period, the IceCaps jumped ahead 2-1 on a redirection from Klingberg. After Albert launched a wrist shot on goal from the point, Klingberg - all alone in front of the net - tipped it through the five hole of Domingue.

In the third period, Gordon extended the IceCaps' lead to two at 3:45. Taking a behind-the-net pass from Jason Jaffray, Gordon one-timed it top shelf past Domingue from the slot.

Portland cut St. John's' lead to one less than three minutes later, however, when Rieder deflected a Brett Hextall slap pass upstairs past a helpless Pasquale to make it 3-2.

With Domingue pulled from the goal in the final minute to give Portland the extra attacker, Pasquale made two outstanding saves to preserve the win for the IceCaps before Klingberg sealed the victory with an empty-net tally with 26 seconds left in the game.

The IceCaps continue their homestand Friday and Saturday night (7:30 p.m. NT) at Mile One Centre, when they host the Toronto Marlies.
