ALBANY, NY - Despite Mattias Tedenby's two-goal performance, the Albany Devils lost to the Springfield Falcons, 3-2, Tuesday at Times Union Center. The setback ends the Devils franchise-record 10-game home point streak.
Springfield used three goals during the first period to help earn their second victory against the Devils since last Friday. Michael Chaput scored at 2:56 and added a shorthanded tally at 12:53. Darryl Boyce sent the Falcons into the first intermission with a 3-1 advantage thanks to a power-play goal at 15:44.
"That was not a good start for us," Tedenby said. "They scored a shorthanded goal and we should have scored on the chance we had in the beginning of the power play. It would have been a different game because I thought we controlled the game a little bit out there today."
Tedenby, who New Jersey sent to Albany Saturday, scored at 6:22 of the first. Kelly Zajac sprung the Devils winger for his first goal since returning to Albany, making it a 1-1 game.
After the intermission, Zajac found Tedenby in the slot at 15:27. The goal, which also included an assist from Seth Helgeson, was Tedenby's fifth goal in four AHL games this season.
"I thought those two were arguably the best two guys on the ice for both teams tonight," said Head Coach Rick Kowalsky about Tedenby and Zajac. "I thought Tedenby was flying and had a lot of confidence with the puck; hopefully it can continue. I was a little worried about the three of them (plus Artem Demkov) not being the biggest guys against a pretty heavy team, but they use their speed and the way they compete, that's enough."
Keith Kinkaid made 18 saves, including a combined 15 in the second and third period. At the other end, former Devil Mike McKenna made 25 saves.
The Devils owned a 27-21 shot advantage and went 0-4 on the power play and 2-3 on the penalty kill.
"Overall, I was certainly happy with the way we played, we just didn't get the result," Kowalsky said. "I think the biggest thing is right down to the wire; we certainly had opportunities."
