Worcester Red Sox News Release
WORCESTER, M.A. - For the first time in more than a month, the Worcester Red Sox (31-33) dropped a third straight game, a 7-4 loss to the Toledo Mud Hens (33-29) on Friday night at Polar Park.
The WooSox took the first lead of the night against Toledo starter Nivaldo Rodriguez, putting two on with one out for Yolmer Sanchez in the second. Sanchez went down 0-2, then smashed a high fastball to left center for an RBI double to put the home team on top.
By night's end, the 29-year-old would become the first Worcester player to double three times in a game, recording his third three-hit game of the Triple-A season.
Worcester starter Brian Keller got off to a strong start, retiring the first nine Toledo batters he faced. In the fourth, Keller allowed two hits, but both of them left the ballpark-a Derek Hill solo homer that just cleared the wall in left, and two batters later, a Jeimer Candelario blast over the Worcester Wall to make it 2-1 Mud Hens.
For the third straight night, Toledo scored in consecutive innings to take a stranglehold on the ballgame. In the fifth on Friday night, it was a four spot, a rally that began with a two-run homer by former Red Sox Ryan Lavarnway. After a walk and a strikeout, Derek Hill smacked an RBI double, and after a Jacob Robson bloop double, Ryan Kreidler's sac-fly extended the road team's lead to 7-1.
Worcester came closer in the bottom of the sixth on a Roberto Ramos two-run homer, a 448-foot shot that easily cleared the Worcester Wall in right. Ramos' swing gave him his fifth home run of the season and first since May 19.
The Mud Hens' offense had its answer again, tacking on a seventh inning run with an RBI single from Jacob Robson off Durbin Feltman (2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K). Following Feltman, Philips Valdez tossed a scoreless eighth, striking out two.
Sanchez lined his third and final double of the night in the bottom of the eighth, allowing Ramos charged home from first to cut the deficit to 7-4.
Zack Kelly added a runless ninth inning of relief for the home team, a ninth consecutive outing without an earned run allowed for the right-hander.
Worcester was held without a run in the bottom of the ninth and lost their third in a row for the first time since May 13-15.
The WooSox continue the series Saturday at 4:05 p.m. against the Toledo Mud Hens, affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. On the mound, Brandon Walter (1-1, 8.22) faces Chase Anderson (2-3, 5.80). Radio coverage is live at 3:45 p.m. on 98.9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network, while television coverage is on NESN.
