Louisville Bats News Release
DURHAM, NC- A three-run, third inning and a two-run homer in the eighth for the Durham Bulls (34-30) proved enough to top the Louisville Bats (23-40) by a score of 5-0 on Friday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
The Durham bullpen combined to retire the final 14 Louisville hitters of the ball game to shutout the Bats by a score of 5-0. For the second night in a row, the game was delayed for more than an hour before getting underway.
Durham scratched the first runs of the game in the bottom of the third frame, when six straight batters reached with one out to plate three runs. However, Louisville starter Ben Lively (2-5, 3.77) was able to stop the Bulls from breaking the game wide open when he whiffed Jordan Qsar and Tristan Grey to leave the bases loaded.
After Durham's scheduled hurler Josh Fleming (6-0, 0.98) was a last-minute scratch, the Bulls 'pen got the nod as Seth Blair, Joel Peguero, Ben Bowden, Chris Muller, Dusten Knight, and Javy Guerra combined for the shutout, striking out 11 and holding Louisville to just three hits on the night.
The Louisville bullpen was not to be outdone, as they took over duties after Ben Lively made an early exit following the third inning.
Pedro Payano and Ryan Hendrix both worked two scoreless frames, each whiffing three, with Payano allowing just two hits and Hendrix a lone knock.
Louisville reliever Jared Solomon looked to follow suit in the eighth, striking out two of his first three hitters faced, but an opposite field, two-run home run from former Louisville Bat Joe Hudson pushed the Bulls lead to the final, 5-0.
The penultimate matchup of the only series between the Bulls and the Bats this season is scheduled for tomorrow night, Saturday June 18, with first pitch slated for 6:35 p.m. Cincinnati rehabber Nick Lodolo (0-1, 5.40) will get the start for Louisville and will face off against fellow southpaw Ryan Yarbrough (0-1, 6.75), who will get the ball for Durham.
