LAST TIME OUT

MOOSIC, PA (June 16, 2022) - The Rochester Red Wings defeated the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders 3-1 on Thursday evening. Jhony Brito logged his second consecutive quality start with six innings of one-run ball on the mound.

The RailRiders started the scoring in the fourth with an RBI single from Ronald Guzmán against Red Wings' starter Cade Cavalli. The 23-year-old righty Cavalli allowed that lone tally over five innings with four strikeouts.

Rochester knotted things up with one run in the sixth. Adrian Sanchez plated one on a ground ball after the Red Wings opened the frame with back-to-back singles versus Scranton/Wilkes-Barre starter Brito. In his third start of the season with SWB, Brito gave up one run in six innings of work and has allowed just two runs over 17.1 innings with the RailRiders this year. The Red Wings then jumped ahead in the seventh via Ildemaro Vargas' two-run home run off RailRiders' reliever Shane Greene to make it 3-1. It was the second long ball of the season for Vargas.

Zach Greene and Greg Weissert combined to pitch two shutout frames out of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre bullpen, but the offense couldn't muster a rally in the 3-1 final. Patrick Murphy (2-0) earned his second win of the season out of the Red Wings' bullpen. Shane Greene (1-1) was saddled with the loss for SWB.

NEWS & NOTES

FIRST THINGS FIRST - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders welcome in the Rochester Red Wings for the only time this season for a six-game series from June 14 to June 19. These two teams have met six times prior in New York, with the Red Wings winning five of six. Rochester entered the set in first place in the International League East, but find themselves in second heading into Friday.

EIGHT WAS ENOUGH - The Red Wings snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 3-1 win on Thursday. It was their first victory since June 5, an 11-2 win over the Buffalo Bisons. The eight-game streak was the longest of their season in which they were outscored 65-29. Rochester has not won consecutive games since winning three straight June 2 to June 4. The Red Wings still find themselves a half-game back of first place Buffalo.

MAKIN' MOVES - Prior to yesterday's game, Ryan Weber signed a Major League contract with the New York Yankees and went on to pitch in part as a replacement of Luis Severino who was placed on the COVID-IL. Severino was reactivated late last night and Weber was designated for an assignment. Additionally, José Mujica was promoted from Double-A Somerset for the third time this season and rejoined the RailRiders. This comes on the heels of Ender Inciarte's release on Wednesday.

Between here and Double-A Somerset, the team Waldichuk pitches for has won eight of ten games he's played this season. This will be the first time in his career that he faces Rochester. The left-hander was fourth in all of Minor League Baseball last season in strikeouts with 163.

These are easily his best numbers against any Triple-A opponent with this much playing time. Of his 167 career hits in Triple-A, 36 of them have come against the Red Wings (22%).

WHEN YOU CALL ME BIG PAPA - Miguel Andújar has a five-game hitting streak entering Friday, the longest of his season with the RailRiders. After a three-hit performance on Wednesday, he has raised his season average to .304, the first time it's been over .300 in the month of June. He has a hit in 24 of 33 games he has played with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season.
