Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. - Carlos Peguero, Dustin Ackley and Rich Poythress each homered as the Tacoma Rainiers rolled to a 9-1 series-opening win over the Las Vegas 51s at Cheney Stadium on Thursday.
Peguero delivered the Rainiers first round-tripper of the night after leading off the bottom of the second inning with a solo shot that tied the score at 1-1. The home run was the outfielder's eighth with Tacoma this season.
First baseman Rich Poythress put the Rainiers on top 3-1 three at-bats later in the inning with a two RBI double that plated Mike Zunino and Eric Thames. Poythress went deep with a solo home run in the fourth and ended the night going 2-for-4 and driving in three runs.
Dustin Ackley also turned in a two-hit effort in Thursday's series opener, including a two-run home run that stretched the Rainiers lead to 7-1 in the fourth. The second baseman has hit safely in each of his last eight games and is batting .400 through nine outings with Tacoma this season.
As a team, the Rainiers combined to collect 12 hits against Las Vegas. Carlos Triunfel went 2-for-3 with a double in his first game since being optioned from Seattle on June 5. Abraham Almonte rebounded from having his 13-game hitting streak snapped on Tuesday and recorded a triple and single.
Reliever Jonathan Arias (1-1) earned his first Triple-A win after holding the 51s to two hits and striking out five over 3.1 shutout innings. Jhonny Nunez allowed one hit over 2.0 scoreless frames over the eighth and ninth.
Brian Sweeney made a spot start for Tacoma after scheduled starter Blake Beavan was recalled to Seattle earlier in the day. Sweeney allowed one run on four hits and fanned four over 3.2 innings.
The Rainiers (37-24) host the second game of the club's four-game series with Las Vegas (31-27) at 7 p.m. tomorrow, June 7. Left-hander James Paxton (2-4, 4.97) is slated to start for Tacoma against New York Mets top pitching prospect, right-hander Zack Wheeler (4-1, 3.86).
