Memphis Redbirds News Release
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Redbirds topped the cross-state rival Nashville Sounds, 2-1, in the second game of a four-game series on Friday night at AutoZone Park.
Five of the six games between Memphis and Nashville have been decided by one run this season. Memphis pitching has held the opposition to two runs or less in eight of the last 10 games.
The Redbirds plated both runs in the bottom of the second inning as Jermaine Curtis reached on an infield single. Justin Christian then followed with an RBI single to right for the first run. Three batters later with Christian on third, Adron Chambers hit an RBI groundout to second.
Nashville scored in the fifth, as Carlos Martinez gave up his first run as a Redbird in 11 1/3 innings this season. Josh Prince smoked a double off the top of the left field wall and scored on the next play as Hainley Statia singled to center.
Martinez scattered six hits for a run while walking a pair in 4 1/3 innings. He also fanned four in 77 pitches (44 for strikes). Sam Freeman (5-2) stranded two inherited runners in 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief to earn the win. Jorge Rondon worked around three hits for two scoreless.
Victor Marte struck out one over a shutout ninth to convert 45th career save, which passed Bryan Falkenborg to set a Redbirds franchise save record.
In his Triple-A debut, Jimmy Nelson (0-1) yielded two unearned runs on three hits with seven strikeouts in five innings for the hard-luck loss.
The Redbirds and Sounds continue their series at 6:05 p.m. CT on Saturday evening at AutoZone Park. Right-hander Mitchell Boggs will make his second start of the season for the Redbirds against Nashville righty Mike Fiers (0-1, 1.50).
