Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers relied on a pair of home runs to blast past the Nashville Sounds 5-3 in front of 2,938 fans at Cheney Stadium on Monday night.
Trailing the Sounds 3-2, outfielder Mike Carp led off the bottom of the sixth inning with his team-leading 11th home run of the season to tie the game. One out later, third baseman Alex Liddi provided the go-ahead run for the Rainiers with a solo shot, his ninth of the season.
Nashville had control of the game early after jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Catcher George Kottaras singled to left field with the bases loaded to clear the way for infielder Eric Farris and outfielder Brett Carroll to score.
Matt Tuiasosopo's double with two outs in the bottom of the second scored Luis Jimenez and cut the Rainiers deficit down to just one run. Outfielder Johan Limonta tied the game at 2-2 with a solo home run before Nashville retook the lead off Brendan Katin's homer to lead off the top of the sixth.
Reliever Scott Patterson (1-0) picked up the win for the Rainiers after tossing a perfect 1.1 innings with one strikeout over the sixth and seventh innings. Right-hander Dan Cortes collected the first save of his 2011 campaign following a scoreless two-inning performance where he allowed two hits with one walk and five strikeouts.
The Rainiers (19-26) are back in action at 11:35 a.m. on Tuesday to play the second game of the club's four-game series with the Sounds. Left-hander Luke French (0-5, 5.98) gets the start for Tacoma looking to collect his first win of the season, with left-hander Chase Wright (1-3, 5.33) getting the start for Nashville.
