Sacramento, California - The New Orleans Zephyrs scored nine second inning runs and defeated the Sacramento River Cats 14-1 in front of 5,027 fans at Raley Field. The Z's won their fourth consecutive game and is a half game back of first place.
The Zephyrs sent 13 batters to the plate in the second inning and scored a season high nine runs in the inning. The Zephyrs scored five times in the third inning to push the lead to 14-0. Josh Kroeger hit his second grand-slam of the season to push the lead to 14. Brad Davis had two hits and drove home three runs in the game.
Chris Sampson got the start for the Zephyrs and pitched six innings allowing one unearned run on six hits. The 33-year-old celebrated his birthday by making his first start of the season. Sampson was signed as a free agent a few weeks back by the Marlins and has been in extended spring training. Garrett Parcell pitched the final three innings and earned a save. Sacramento starter Lenny DiNardo took the loss for the Cats.
Joe Thurston added two hits and was hit by a pitch three times in the game. It set a Zephyrs record and tied the PCL record for most hit bats-man in a game.
Game Notes - The Zephyrs have allowed nine earned runs in five games on this trip (1.84 ERA). The 14 runs scored is a season high for the Zephyrs. New Orleans scored 13 runs in an inning last June 18th in Memphis. The Zephyrs are 4-1 on their eight game west coast road-trip
