Iowa Cubs News Release
Behind a strong pitching performance from 51s' starter Scott Richmond, Las Vegas topped Iowa 4-1 Tuesday night at Principal Park.
Richmond (3-2, 6.50) faced the minimum over the first two innings despite walking the leadoff batter both times. Bobby Scales was caught stealing in the first and Marquez Smith was doubled off first base after Brad Snyder hit into a fly-ball double play in the second. Richmond also walked two in the third inning, but Iowa could not capitalize as Tyler Colvin grounded out to end the inning.
Richmond's only blemish on the night was a solo home run by Snyder to lead off the bottom of fourth. The right-hander bounced back by retiring nine of the next ten batters to complete six innings of work. The Cubs' only other hit off the 51s' starter was a bunt single by Matt Camp in the fifth inning. Richmond finished the night with the win and a quality start, his second in consecutive appearances. He allowed one run on two hits, walked four and stuck out two.
Las Vegas was able to get to Cubs' starter Robert Coello early. The first four batters reached base for the 51s in the first inning. Mike McCoy walked to begin the game but was caught stealing second base. Dewayne Wise doubled, Brett Lawrie was hit by a pitch and Travis Snider produced the first run of the night with an RBI-single that scored Wise.
Walks haunted Coello in the second and third innings, giving Las Vegas a larger lead. Catcher Brian Jeroloman walked and came around to score three batters later on an RBI-single from Wise. Jeroloman would walk again in the third inning, this time with the bases loaded, to force in a run and give Vegas a 3-0 lead. The 51s would tally their final run of the night in the sixth inning on an RBI-single from Wise. He led the Vegas offense, going 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI.
The 51s' bullpen shut the door over the final three innings with Danny Farquhar pitching the ninth for his sixth save of the season.
Coello (3-5, 7.82) took the loss for Iowa. He allowed four runs on eight hits, walked five and struck out four.
Steve Clevenger's hitting streak snapped with an 0-for-4 effort tonight. Clevenger had previously hit in all eight games he had started with Iowa this season since being promoted from double-A Tennessee.
Iowa and Las Vegas will play game three of this four-game set Wednesday night at Principal Park. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. Vegas LH Brad Mills (4-2, 2.34) will face Iowa RH Ramon Ortiz (1-2, 4.86).
