Tacoma Rainiers News Release
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah. - The Tacoma Rainiers (36-29) dropped their second straight road contest, a 7-3 decision to the Salt Lake Bees (32-32), on Wednesday night at Smith's Ballpark.
Tacoma third baseman Chris Taylor checked in with a 5-for-5 performace, giving the Rainiers their first five-hit outing of the season and the first since Ramon Flores went 5-for-5 on Aug. 7, 2015. Taylor drove in a pair of runs, extended his on-base streak to 15 games, and raised his season batting average to .313. It was the first five-hit game of Taylor's career.
Already holding a 1-0 lead, Salt Lake struck for a trio of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Cal Towey opened the frame and came across two batters later on an RBI single from Anthony Bemboom. Daniel Nava capped off the scoring with a two-run double to right field, giving the Bees a 4-0 lead.
Tacoma struck for their first run of the night in the top of the sixth when left fielder Patrick Kivlehan smacked an RBI single to score first baseman Efren Navarro, who had tripled to open the inning.
The Bees answered with another three-run outburst in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead to 7-1. Ji-Man Choi and Sherman Johnson both drove in runs with RBI singles in the frame.
With a pair of runners in scoring position and one out in the top of the ninth, Taylor lined his fifth single of the night into center field, scoring two runs and cutting the Bees lead to 7-3.
Tacoma starting pitcher Cody Martin (5-4) was handed his fourth loss of the year after allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits over 3.2 innings of work.
Recently promoted left-hander Kyle Hunter and Jonathan Aro combined to work the final 4.1 innings for the Rainiers, allowing a combined three runs on six hits.
The Rainiers and Bees wrap up their series tomorrow, Thursday, June 16 with a first pitch scheduled for 11:05 a.m. PT. Left-hander Brad Mills (2-1, 3.68) will start for Tacoma, while Salt Lake will hand the ball to right-hander Kyle McGowin (3-2, 5.12).
