
Offensive Surge Lifts Tacoma To 12-7 Victory In Salt Lake

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah. - The Tacoma Rainiers (37-29) offense powered the club to a 12-7 victory over the Salt Lake Bees (32-33) in Thursday afternoon's series finale at Smith's Ballpark.
Center fielder Boog Powell (3x4), catcher Mike Zunino (3x5), right fielder Mike Baxter (3x4), and second baseman Daniel Robertson (2x5) recorded multi-hit games while leading the Rainiers 16-hit showing. The offense combined to draw four walks and hit four extra base hits.
Tacoma starting pitcher Brad Mills (3-1) worked 5.0 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits to collect his third win of the year.
Powell opened the top of the first inning with a single to left and advanced to third on a stolen base and throwing error before being driven in on a groundout by first baseman Efren Navarro, giving Tacoma an early 1-0 lead.
Robertson added to the Rainiers lead with a solo home run in the top of the second inning, pushing the Tacoma advantage out to 2-0.
Back-to-back singles from Zunino and Baxter put a pair of runners in scoring position for third baseman Patrick Kivlehan in the top of the fourth - he laced an RBI single to center to score the pair and give the Rainiers a 4-0 edge.
Salt Lake struck for five singles and drew a walk to score a pair of runs in the bottom half of the fourth, cutting into the Rainiers lead at 4-2.
With one out in the top of the fifth, the Rainiers collected a walk from shortstop Chris Taylor and proceeded to notch four consecutive hits to score four runs. Robertson and Zunino smacked RBI singles, while Baxter checked in with a two-run double, extending the Rainiers lead to 8-2.
The Bees got a run back in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from Cal Towey, bringing Salt Lake back within five runs at 8-3.
After a quiet top of the sixth, the Bees struck for another run in the bottom of the frame - Ji-Man Choi drove in Juan Graterol with a two-out RBI single, making the score 8-4 in favor of the Rainiers.
Tacoma and Salt Lake combined for seven runs in the seventh inning, opened on a solo home run from Zunino and capped by an RBI single from Rafael Ortega, to create the final score of 12-7.
Paul Fry and Casey Coleman covered the final 4.0 innings out of the Rainiers bullpen and allowed a combined four runs on seven hits. Coleman worked 3.0 innings to earn his second save of the season.
The Rainiers return home to open a four-game set against the Fresno Grizzlies tomorrow, Friday, June 17. Tacoma right-hander Joe Wieland (4-4, 8.29) is slated to start against Fresno righty Joe Musgrove (2-2, 4.34). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. PT.
