Field Staffs Announced for 2016 Triple-A All-Star Game
June 16, 2016 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release
Chris Tremie, manager of the defending International League champion Columbus Clippers, and Wally Backman, skipper of the Las Vegas 51s, have been named managers of their respective league's All-Star teams for the 2016 Triple-A All-Star Game. The 29th annual Triple-A All-Star Game will take place at BB&T Ballpark, home of the IL's Charlotte Knights, on Wednesday, July 13 at 7:00 p.m. EST on MLB Network as well as the Triple-A All-Star Game Radio Network.
Chris Tremie is in his fourth season as manager of Columbus, having already guided the Clippers to a pair of division titles as well as the 2015 Governors' Cup championship. He's been a skipper in the Cleveland farm system since 2006, which followed a 14-year playing career that included stints in the big leagues with the White Sox, Rangers, Pirates, and Astros. Tremie is the third Clippers manager to serve in that capacity at the Triple-A All-Star Game, following Bucky Dent (1989) and Mike Sarbaugh (2011-12).
Tremie's IL All-Star staff includes Stu Cliburn, pitching coach for the Rochester Red Wings, and Andy Tomberlin, hitting coach for the host Charlotte Knights. The 2016 season is Cliburn's 25th in the Twins organization and his fourth as Rochester's pitching coach after having rejoined the team this year for the first time since 2008. Stu's brother Stan served as a coach on the IL All-Star squad in 2007. Tomberlin is in his 14th season coaching in the White Sox farm system and his fourth year in Charlotte, where last season his Knights led the League in home runs, total bases, and slugging.
Wally Backman is in his 11th season managing in the affiliated Minor Leagues and fifth at the Triple-A level. He piloted the IL's Buffalo Bisons in 2012 before the Mets moved their affiliation west. The 2014 PCL Manager of the Year has guided the 51s to a pair of division titles plus a 2nd place finish in three seasons with Las Vegas. Backman spent the first nine years of his 14-year playing career with the Mets, including appearing in 124 games as the second baseman for the 1986 World Champions. He'll be the third Triple-A All-Star Game manager representing Las Vegas, following Jerry Royster (1998) and Marty Brown (2012).
Memphis Redbirds manager Mike Shildt, along with El Paso Chihuahua's pitching coach Bronswell Patrick, will join Backman in Charlotte as members of the PCL's All-Star staff. Shildt guided Memphis to 73 wins and a 2nd place finish in his first season at the helm in 2015. A native of Charlotte, Shildt previously coached at both UNC Charlotte and UNC Asheville, his alma mater, and his mother Lib formerly handled public relations for the Double-A Charlotte O's. Patrick is in his third season as a Triple-A pitching coach, having been with the Tucson Padres in 2013 before arriving in El Paso in 2015. Patrick hails from Greenville, North Carolina.
The athletic trainer for the IL All-Star squad is Charlotte's Scott Johnson, currently in his 14th season with the Knights and 28th overall in the White Sox organization. Johnson was also the trainer on the IL All-Star staff at the 2003 Triple-A All-Star Game in Memphis. For the Pacific Coast League, James Petra of Sacramento will serve as athletic trainer. Petra is in his eighth season with the Giants and third at the Triple-A classification.
