June 16, 2016 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Fresno Grizzlies News Release
The Fresno Grizzlies defeated the Sacramento River Cats 4-3 Wednesday night for their fourth-straight win thanks to shortstop Jack Mayfield (1-for-3). For the second time in three days, Mayfield supplied all the Grizzly RBI. He hit his second home run in three days, but this time unloaded the bases with a grand slam.
In the top of the fifth, Grizzlies' third baseman Colin Moran doubled to lead off the inning. Then, Jon Singleton (1-for-2) walked and Jon Kemmer singled to load the bases. Finally, Mayfield stepped up to the plate where he unleashed a grand slam to left. The home run was his second of the series and season. It gave Fresno a 4-0 advantage.
The River Cats responded in the bottom of the fifth when Gorkys Hernandez (2-for-4) doubled to left, knocking in two Sacramento runners. It cut the deficit to 4-2.
Grizzlies' starter Brad Peacock (1-3) picked up the win after he tossed five and two-third innings, allowing two runs (all earned), on six hits, walking one and striking out four.
In the bottom of the seventh, Sacramento tacked on a run after a triple by Juan Ciriaco (2-for-3) and a sacrifice fly to right by Hernandez. The sacrifice fly gave Hernandez all three RBI for the River Cats and made the score 4-3.
Sacramento' starter Clayton Blackburn (4-4) picked up the loss after he twirled seven innings, allowing four runs (all earned), on four hits, walking one and punching out four.
Grizzlies' closer James Hoyt picked up his PCL-leading 14th save after throwing a scoreless bottom of the ninth. He punched out two batters in the inning.
The finale of the four-game series will be Thursday night at Raley Field in Sacramento. The Grizzlies look for their second sweep of the season (Oklahoma City, May 23-26), and their first versus the River Cats of the 2016 campaign. Fresno RHP Cesar Valdez (2-1, 4.79) will face Sacramento RHP Chris Heston (1-7, 3.99) with a first pitch scheduled at 7:05 PT.
