MOOSIC, Pa. - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders fell to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs 7-5 on Tuesday night at PNC Field.
The IronPigs struck in the top of the first inning as Dean Anna and Joey Meneses walked and Collin Cowgill singled. Anna and Cowgill were plated on an error by Tyler Austin and Trevor Plouffe knocked in Menses to give Lehigh Valley a 3-0 lead. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre answered in the bottom half of the inning as Tyler Wade led off with a walk and advanced to second on a balk. Mark Payton doubled to bring Wade home.
In the bottom of the second, the RailRiders added to their total as Kyle Higashioka bashed a deep home run over the left-field wall. The IronPigs responded in the top of the third as Cowgill singled and Mitch Walding and Adron Chambers walked. Plouffe then smacked a bases-clearing double to give Lehigh Valley a 6-2 lead.
The IronPigs scored again in the top of the fifth inning as Cowgill walked and then scored from first on a throwing error by Higashioka. After five scoreless innings, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre pushed another run across in the bottom of the eighth when Austin clobbered a solo home run.
In the bottom of the ninth, Caldwell singled with one out. Wade walked with two outs, and Mark Payton smoked a triple down the right-field line to bring home both runners and cut the RailRiders deficit in half. Drury then grounded out to third to end the game and his six-game on-base streak.
For the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Wade was perfect at the plate going one-for-one and walking four times. Bruce Caldwell was two-for-four with two singles, and Austin was two-for-four with a monster home run and a single.
The RailRiders homestand with Lehigh Valley will continue on Wednesday night at PNC Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. LHP Josh Rogers (6-5, 3.38) heads to the mound for SWB, Lehigh Valley counters with RHP Ben Lively (2-2, 2.18).
