Syracuse Mets News Release
Rochester, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs dropped the opening game of the series to the Rochester Red Wings, 4-3, Tuesday night at Frontier Field. Tuffy Gosewisch reached base three times and doubled twice on a day where the Chiefs out-hit the Wings 10-6. But a four-run third inning was enough for the Red Wings to pick up the win. The Red Wings scored only one earned run off Chiefs pitching in the game.
Syracuse (29-39) began the scoring in the second inning against Dietrich Enns. Jacob Wilson doubled down the left-field line, and scored on a Moises Sierra single for a 1-0 lead.
In the third, Tuffy Gosewisch nearly replicated Wilson's double, smoking a two-base hit into the left-field corner. Andrew Stevenson followed with an RBI single to push the Chiefs lead to two.
Rochester (32-35) would score in only one inning, but a four-run third was enough. Gregorio Petit started the frame with a single off John Simms. With one out, Nick Gordon reached base on a fielder's choice on a grounder to second, reaching after an error on Adrian Sanchez which pushed Petit to third. Jake Cave followed with a two-run double to score both runners and tie the game at two. After a fly out and walk, Willians Astudio and Cameron Rupp each followed with RBI singles to plate a third and fourth Red Wings runs. Only Gordon's run was earned in the inning against Simms.
The Chiefs added a third run in the fourth. Yadiel Hernandez walked with two outs to extend the inning and Chris Dominguez doubled. With Gosewisch batting, a wild pitch by Enns allowed Hernandez to score to make it a 4-3 game, but Syracuse would get no closer.
Syracuse and Rochester continue the series Wednesday afternoon at 12:35 p.m. RHP Phillips Valdez is scheduled to start for the Chiefs opposite LHP Adalberto Mejia for the Red Wings.
