Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

WICHITA, Kan. - The RailCats got out to an 8-2 lead and withstood a comeback effort from the Wingnuts to win 9-6 on Saturday night. The win bumps the 'Cats record to 46-46 on the season and pulls them within 6.5 games of Wichita in the Central division, as they avoided being eliminated from the division title race. The RailCats are 5.5 games behind Winnipeg in the wild card with eight games to play.

The game was delayed 50 minutes by rain at the start. The RailCats then jumped ahead against Wingnuts starter Ryan Hinson right away in the top of the first. Adam Klein, Mike Massaro and Brian Kolb loaded the bases on three straight singles and then a wild pitch scored Klein to make it 1-0. Back-to-back RBI groundouts by Ryan Babineau and Mike Rohde made it 3-0.

Wichita came back with one in the bottom of the first off of RailCats starter Stephen Hiscock. Jake Kahaulelio walked and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Greg Porter to bring the Wingnuts to within 3-1.

Klein added a sacrifice fly in the top of the second to get a run back and put the RailCats up 4-1. The Wingnuts came right back in the bottom half of the inning, scoring on Ryan Khoury's RBI double to cut the lead to 4-2.

In the top of the fourth, the 'Cats blew it open against Hinson. Five straight singles, including an RBI single by Chase Tucker and a two-run single by Klein, made it 7-1 RailCats. Klein drove in three runs in the game. Brian Kolb's single gave the 'Cats their eighth run of the game.

Hinson (8-8) went seven innings for Wichita, allowing eight runs, all earned, on 12 RailCats hits. Hinson walked one and struck out three.

The Wingnuts comeback started in the bottom of the sixth. Jared McDonald and Khoury hit back-to-back doubles to bring the score to within 8-3. They scored three more in the bottom of the seventh on Jessie Mier's run-scoring single and then a two-run triple by McDonald, cutting the lead down to 8-6.

The 'Cats added an insurance run in the top of the ninth, scoring Chase Tucker on a wild pitch by reliever Nick Walters. Tucker finished 3-for-3, his first three-hit game as a pro, scoring two runs and also drawing a walk. He also drove in the first run of his career.

Hiscock (5-6) battled control issues all night, but still got through 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. He struck out one Wingnut hitter while walking four. Marco Gonzalez came on in the ninth inning to convert his seventh save of the season.

The rubber match of the series is at 2:05 on Sunday afternoon.
