Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
FARGO, ND - One day after the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks became the first team in the American Association to clinch a playoff berth, the club made a pair of moves to strengthen the ballclub for the post-season at the roster deadline.
The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks have acquired RHP Eric Massingham from the Evansville Otters of the Frontier League for a player to be named later and cash considerations and signed former North Dakota State University INF Max Casper to a contract. American Association teams had to finalize rosters at 11:59 p.m. on Friday night for the post-season.
Massingham, 25, was 4-2 with a 2.86 ERA and 21 saves in 33 games for the Otters this season. He pitched 34.2 innings and allowed 13 runs (11 earned) on 29 hits. Massingham struck out 42 batters and walked 15. In 2011 with Evansville, he was 2-3 with a 1.38 ERA and 22 saves. Massingham struck out 47 batters and walked 16 in 45.2 innings pitched.
Massingham began his professional career in 2009 after being drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 25th round out of Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, CA. He pitched with Williamsport of the New York-Penn League (Low-A) in 2009 and Lakewood of the South Atlantic League (A) in 2010.
Casper, 22, finished his college career at North Dakota State University this spring and helped the Bison to a school-record 40 wins. He batted .300 with nine doubles, one triple, 20 RBI and 29 runs scored in 60 games. Casper signed earlier this summer with the Sioux Falls Pheasants, where he batted .111 (3-for-33) in 12 games.
Both Massingham and Casper will be on the active roster today as the RedHawks attempt to clinch the North Division championship against the Kansas City T-Bones at CommunityAmerica Park in Kansas City, KS. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
The RedHawks Magic Number to clinch the North Division Championship is one. Either a Fargo-Moorhead victory or St. Paul Saints loss will give the RedHawks a division title. Fargo-Moorhead can do no worse than be the Wild Card team in this season's playoffs.
