August 25, 2012 - American Association (AA) News Release
Newark 2, Lincoln 1
The Bears put two runs on the board in the second inning, and that was all starting Newark pitcher Omar Javier would need. Javier struck out eight Lincoln batters in seven shutout innings while allowing just three hits to lead Newark to a 2-1 victory. Bears 3B Juan Martinez singled in Newark's first run in the second inning, one of his two hits on the night. The Saltdogs put the tying run in scoring position in the eighth inning when David Espinosa followed his RBI single with a stolen base. But then Bears reliever Anthony Pluta struck out CF Mike Provencher to end the threat.
Sioux Falls 6, Sioux City 2
Pheasants starting hurler Mitchell Clegg threw all nine innings for his club Saturday, giving the bullpen a night off and leading Sioux Falls to a 6-2 victory over Sioux City. Clegg allowed two runs on seven hits and three walks with four strikeouts. The Pheasants put runs on the board early in support of Clegg, plating two on a Cesar Nicolas single in the first inning. Nicolas drove in three total runs while going 2-for-3 with a walk. For the Explorers, 1B Jorge Delgado went yard to open the fourth inning, one of his two hits on the night. The homer cut a three-run Sioux Falls lead to two. But the Explorers wouldn't get any closer the rest of the night thanks to strong performances up and down the lineup that bolstered Clegg's nine innings of work.
Fargo-Moorhead 3, Kansas City 1
RedHawks starting pitcher Tyler Herron surrendered a solo home run to Kansas City's Brandon Jones in the first inning. From that point on, however, Herron was nearly unhittable. The 6-foot-3 righty struck out nine batters in 7.2 innings and allowed only three hits, guiding Fargo-Moorhead to a 3-1 win over the T-Bones. The ReadHawks tied the game with a one-run fourth inning and took a 2-1 lead in the very next frame on a Buddy Sosnoskie single. A ninth-inning solo homer from RedHawks 3B Eric Campbell capped off the scoring and brought Campbell's season home run total to 10. Campbell went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.
Winnipeg 5, St. Paul 2
Goldeyes 1B/RF Josh Mazzola had just one hit against St. Paul on Saturday. That hit, however, was a big one. Mazzola homered in the third inning to break a scoreless tie and put the Goldeyes on top for good. Working with a lead for most of the contest, starting Winnipeg pitcher Andrew Walker nearly gave the Goldeyes bullpen the night off. But with the tying run at the plate with two outs in the ninth, Mazzola stepped off the mound, making way for Chris Bodishbaugh, who promptly got Jose Hernandez to fly out to end the game. St. Paul 1B Ole Sheldon hit his 20th dinger of the year, a solo shot in the fourth inning that brought the Saints to within one run at 2-1. But that was as close as St. Paul would get the rest of the night thanks to Walker and some timely hitting in the Winnipeg lineup.
Amarillo 5, Grand Prairie 1
It took them a little while to get going, but the Sox got on track in the fifth inning against Grand Prairie. In the final five frames, Amarillo scored five runs to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 5-1 victory. Every player int he Amarillo lineup had at least one hit, with 3B Jonathan Cisneros tallying a game-high three base knocks. Cisneros also walked once in the game. While all three of Cisneros' hits were singles, four Sox had doubles in the game. One of those men with two-baggers - 2B Adam Buschini - scored two runs and drove in another to bolster his one-hit night.
Laredo 5, El Paso 3
The Lemurs won their ninth consecutive game Tuesday night, taking down El Paso, 5-3, and increasing their lead over Grand Prairie in the South Division by a game. The Lemurs fell behind El Paso twice in the early going. But in both situations, Laredo came back quickly to tie the score - a two home-run fourth inning perhaps the most dramatic example. And with the game knotted at three in the sixth, Laredo got four hits to score two runs and take its first lead of the game. That advantage would hold, and Laredo now sits at 49-43. Lemurs LF John Allen doubled in the go-ahead run in the sixth, his second RBI of the night on his first hit. The first homer in the fourth belonged to SS Jimmy Mojica, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs and an RBI to lead the Laredo attack.
Gary SouthShore 9, Wichita 6
Playing small ball worked out pretty well for the RailCats on Saturday against Wichita. Every one of Gary SouthShore's 12 hits were singles, with all but one RailCats batters picking up at least one base knock. Gary SouthShore scored three runs on three hits in the top of the first inning and never trailed on their way to a 9-6 victory over Wichita. Leadoff RF Adam Klein scored the game's first run, a nice start to a 2-for-3, three-RBI night. At the plate for the Wingnuts, CF Jared McDonald scored a run and drove two in while going 2-for-5 with a double and a triple. His three-bagger drove in two runs in the Wingnuts' three-run seventh. But those were the last two for Wichita on the night, and the Wingnuts couldn't muster a full comeback against the RailCats.
