El Paso Diablos News Release
LAREDO, TX- The Diablos could not hold on to an early 3-1 lead as the hometown Laredo Lemurs scored four unanswered runs to win 5-3, posting their ninth straight victory and third straight over El Paso to begin a crucial four-game series.
A sacrifice fly from Welington Dotel got the Diablos started in the very first inning, but Laredo responded with one of their own in the bttom half of the frame to tie the score 1-1.
The Diablos scored for the final time on the red hot Daniel Nelson's two-run double in the third to put El Paso in front 3-1. With a sixth inning walk, Nelson reached base for the seventh consecutive plate appearance.
Nelson, however, was not enough as the Lemurs tied the score in the fourth on a pair of solo home runs. Jimmy Mojica went deep to left center to draw Laredo to within one. Then, former Diablo Javier Brito hit his ninth dinger of the season to knot the score at three apiece.
The Lemurs took the lead for good in the sixth, getting RBI hits from John Allen and another former Diablo Uriak Marquez.
El Paso rallied in the ninth, putting the first two runners on with nobody out. But closer Mike Benacka retired the next three hitters to give the Lemurs the victory and a tighter strange hold on first place.
David Casillas (6-1) was hit with the first loss of his professional career after throwing five and two thirds innings, surrendering five runs and striking out four. Meanwhile, Lemurs reliever Edwin Walker Jr. (5-1) pitched three scoreless innings with six strikeouts in relief to earn the win.
The Diablos will attempt to salvage the series and avoid a sweep on Sunday behind ace Scott Hodsdon. El Paso now trails the Lemurs by four games with ten left to play in the regular season. First pitch of the finale is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. (6:30 MST).
