Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

GARY, Ind. - The first-place Gary SouthShore RailCats jumped out to an early lead and never looked back rallying for a split of Sunday's doubleheader thanks to a 5-2 win in Game Two.

After being blanked in Game One, the RailCats offense took out their frustration on Captains starter Josh Strawn plating five runs in the game's first four innings. Second baseman Brad Boyer paced the way for the 'Cats with a pair of hits including a solo home run in the third that just trickled inside the right field fair pole. The RailCats split coupled with a Wichita Wingnuts loss in Winnipeg Sunday afternoon means the 'Cats remain in first place in the Central Division of the American Association by two games with just 14 games to go in the regular season.

Ryne Reynoso (2-3, 4.47) picked up right where the 'Cats pitching staff left off in the Game One and allowed just the one run on six hits over his five innings of work. The RailCats righty struck out two and walked two in Game Two of the doubleheader Sunday. Hard-throwing reliever Chris Little worked a scoreless and hitless sixth for the RailCats and Will Krout, who pitched in both games of the doubleheader Sunday, allowed a run on three hits in Game Two.

The 'Cats broke a scoreless tie in the home half of the second with a pair of runs to take a 2-0 advantage. Toddric Johnson led off with a single and advanced to second on a Brian Kolb sacrifice bunt. Following a walk to Mike Rohde, catcher Craig Maddox singled on a dribbler near the mound to load the bases. Two runs came around to score on a fielder's choice by Chris Carrara.

The U. S. Steel Yard scoreboard read 4-0 with the home team in front after another two-run frame in the third. Boyer led off with a solo shot to right and the second crossed the plate when Cristian Guerrero scored on a Rohde sacrifice fly.

Shreveport-Bossier cracked the run column with a solo tally in the fourth to cut the RailCats lead to three when Chad Gabriel doubled and scored on an RBI-single to center off the bat of Brian Peterson. However, the 'Cats stretched the score to 5-1 in the home half of the fourth as Carrara came around to score on a Mike Massaro single.

The Captains managed to scratch together a run and had the tying run at the plate before Krout shut the door on Shreveport, inducing the groundout to third to preserve the win for the RailCats. Game four of this six-game set will see the RailCats send LHP Carlos Rivas (5-0, 3.34) to the mound to take on the Captains RHP Alex Kaminsky (5-2, 6.18) for a 7:10 p.m. contest Monday.

TRANSACTION NEWS: Prior to Game One the RailCats added former Purdue North Central outfielder Nate Bryan to the roster.
