Wingnuts Drop Finale of Road Trip

WINNIPEG, Manitoba- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 4-2 to the Winnipeg Goldeyes at Shaw Park on Sunday afternoon.

Tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Ridge Carpenter led off with a double to center field and moved to third on Price Kendall's groundball single through the left side. Logan Hoch relieved Kendy Batista and recorded an out at the plate on Carpenter when Kody Kaiser bounced into a fielder's choice. With runners on second and third and one out, the Wingnuts' intentionally walked John Weber. Hoch then walked Brian Myrow and Wes Long back-to-back with the bases loaded to force in two runs.

Jamie Vermilyea took over in the top of the eighth and worked a six-out save to close out the game.

The Wingnuts jumped on the board first for a third straight game. Mike Conroy led off with a walk, stole second, and took third on a sacrifice bunt from Josh Horn. Conroy scored on an error by Long at shortstop. Wichita went on to load the bases, but Goldeyes' starter Zach Baldwin escaped further trouble.

Kaiser hit a one-out, solo home run in the bottom of the first to tie the game. Wingnuts' starter Nick Singleton kept the Wingnuts in the ballgame, keeping things tied until the sixth when he allowed a two-out double to Louis Ott. Singleton was relieved by Batista who allowed an RBI double to Luis Alen that made it 2-1 Goldeyes.

The Wingnuts briefly tied the game in the top of the eighth when Horn doubled to left-center and then scored on an RBI single through the right side from Juan Richardson.

Singleton took a no-decision, allowing two earned runs on four hits in five and two-thirds innings. Singleton walked seven and struck out two.

Baldwin also took a no-decision, allowing one earned run on six hits in five innings. Baldwin walked three and struck out one.

Batista took the loss for Wichita. Aaron Hartsock earned the win for Winnipeg.

The Wingnuts walked 10 batters in the loss. Wichita concludes the long portion of their road trip with a record of 7-6, having won three of four series along the way.
