Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release

FARGO, N.D. - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (37-49) swept the St. Paul Saints (48-38) with a 5-3 win on Saturday night at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo, ND.

After falling behind in the first inning against the RedHawks 2-0 in the first game and 3-0 in the second game, the Saints were hoping to do some early scoring of their own in the series finale. Adam Frost put St. Paul in good position for that to happen with a leadoff triple. Then, Ole Sheldon capitalized on the opportunity with an RBI single.

That run looked like it would be enough for the Saints to have their first lead heading into the second inning in the series when the first two RedHawks batters went down in order. It was at that point that a couple of deep line drives gave Fargo-Moorhead their third straight early lead over the Saints. Nic Jackson lined a double off the right field wall and Jesse Hoorelbeke followed with a frozen rope over the left field fence for his 14th home run of the season to make the score 2-1. That home run tied Hoorelbeke with Darryl Motley for the most home runs as a RedHawk at 64.

The RedHawks added two more runs in the third inning as Jackson plated Jake Krause on a fielder's choice and scored later on a Hoorelbeke single. Ole Sheldon responded for the Saints with a solo shot to lead off the fourth inning. Sheldon's home run kept St. Paul within two as they trailed the RedHawks 4-2.

C.J. Retherford and Carlo Cota teamed up to add an insurance run in the seventh inning. Retherford started the inning with a single through the left side of the infield. Two batters later, Cota came through with a two-out line drive to bring in Retherford.

Kevin Light (1-4) had his best start of the season allowing only two runs (earned) on four hits while striking out five in his first win of the year. Jake Schmidt (5-3) received the loss for St. Paul after giving up four runs (all earned) on nine hits. Donnie Smith gave up two hits and a run (unearned) in the ninth inning but was able seal the sweep and get his sixth save of the season.

Retherford was 3-for-4 for the RedHawks and Hoorelbeke was 2-for-4 with three runs batted in. Mike Coles had a hit in his return to the lineup after missing over 20 days due to an ankle injury. For the Saints, Sheldon went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in.

The sweep marks the RedHawks' first three-game win streak since mid-June.

The RedHawks welcome the Sioux City Explorers for a three-game series starting Tuesday night with hopes to continue their winning streak. Game time is 7:02 pm. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling 701-235-6161, online at www.fmredhawks.com, or at the Ticket Office during business hours.
