Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

GARY, In.---Ryan DiPietro (W, 9-4) threw a masterful seven innings at U.S. Steel Yard Sunday afternoon in game one of the Captains doubleheader with Gary SouthShore, allowing no runs on four hits while walking one and striking out eight in the 1-0 Shreveport-Bossier win. The RailCats would rebound to beat the Captains in game two with a 5-2 victory.

The RailCats left six men on through the game's first four innings in game one, but DiPietro would retire the final nine batters he faced, including five by strike out. He K'ed RailCats third baseman Chris Carrara to end the ball game.

Joe Urtuzuastegui scored the game's only run, coming in on a Bryan Sabatella fielder's choice grounder in the third. Captains left fielder Chad Gabriel went 2-for-3 with a pair of base hits. Gabriel now has six multi-hit games in his first nine played as a member of the Captains.

Gary threatened to score in both the third and the fourth, putting men on first and second with one out in each frame. In the third, DiPietro got Mike Rhode to fly out to left and Mike Valadez to foul out to first. The next inning Brad Boyer flew out to deep left-center and Christian Guerrero struck out to end the threat.

Gary starter Jeremy Hauer (L, 2-1) gave up the game's only run and went three innings, allowing two hits while walking one and striking out one.

In the second game, the RailCats got to Captains starter Josh Strawn (L, 2-2) for two runs in both the second and third innings, adding another in the fifth and sending Strawn out of the ball game after 3.1 innings, his shortest outing of the year.

RailCats second baseman Brad Boyer was 2-for-4 with a solo home run to start the third, which put Gary up 3-0. The next hitter in the inning, Christian Guerrero, reached base on a Bryan Sabatella fielding error at third and would come home later in the inning on a Mike Rohde sacrifice fly.

Gary SouthShore got on the board in the second on a Chris Carrara fielder's choice scoring Toddric Johnson. Rohde would also score on the play when Mike Provencher made a throwing error from second on the potential double play.

The Captains plated a run in the fourth when Gabriel hit a two-out double and came home on a Brian Peterson base hit.

Trailing 5-1 in the seventh and final inning, the Captains mounted a rally. Jonathan Johnson started it off with a one-out single followed by a Mike Provencher base hit. Robert Perry would score Johnson on a fielder's choice grounder to short. Perry legged it out and came up safe at first to keep the game alive. Following an infield hit by Sabatella to put runners on the corners, Andres Rodriguez came to the plate. Sabatella took second on defensive indifference, but RailCats reliever Will Krout got Rodriguez to ground out to third, ending the game.

Strawn gave up seven hits and five runs (four earned) in 3.1 innings. He walked three and didn't record a strike out. Captains relievers Jameson Maj and Hector Carrasco combined to throw 2.2 scoreless innings. Ryne Reynoso (W, 4-5), the RailCats starter, lasted five innings, allowing a run on six hits while walking two and striking out two.

Sabatella was 2-for-4 and 3-for-7 in the doubleheader. Gabriel was 1-for-3 with a double in game two and finished the doubleheader going 3-for-6.

With the doubleheader split, Shreveport-Bossier is now 39-46 on the season and 1-5 against the RailCats.
