Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

The Winnipeg Goldeyes would not go down without a fight. They almost had one, too.

The Goldeyes salvaged the final game of a three-game series with the Wichita Wingnuts, 4-2, in front of 7,138 spectators at Shaw Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Fish scored a pair of runs on back-to-back bases-loaded walks to break open a 2-2 tie in the seventh and guarantee that they weren't going to be swept in this weekend series by a very good Wingnuts team.

However, blood started to boil in the eighth when, with runners on first and second, Goldeyes third baseman Louis Ott played a hard ground ball off the bat of Wichita catcher Edwin Bellorin stepped on third to get lead runner Jorge Delgado and then fired to first to put out Bellorin and record the inning-ending double-play. However, Ott said he took issue with Delgado's slide - it was nowhere near the base and designed to take out Ott - and he told him so.

"It was a bulls*** slide," Ott said. "I just told him it was."

Delgado took offense and the dugouts cleared and while no punches were thrown, there were plenty of words exchanged. After three games, Wichita and Winnipeg obviously have a rivalry.

It was a great play by Ott and set up a tidy three-up-three-down ninth from Goldeyes closer Jamie Vermilyea and it gave Winnipeg its 50th victory of the season. At 50-36, the Fish remained in first place in the American Association's North Division.

"That was a great game, it's a good team over there," said Ott, who had two walks and a double and scored a run. "I think we're going to see that team again in the playoffs."

It was a terrific game, close and hard-fought. After Wichita scored a run in the first inning, the Goldeyes answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the first as Kody Kaiser hit a solo homer in his first at bat of the day. Kaiser went on to score two runs and drive one in.

Winnipeg went ahead 2-1 in the sixth as Ott doubled and scored on a double by Luis Alen, who had three hits and an RBI on the day.

After Wichita tied it in the top of the seventh, the Goldeyes won it in the bottom of the inning as Brian Myrow walked with the bases loaded and then Wes Long did the same.

In all, the Wingnuts pitchers gave up 11 walks. Starter Nick Singleton offered up eight of them, but it was poor Kendy Batista (0-3, 3.22 ERA), who didn't walk anybody and yet was still tagged with the loss after Logan Hoch came in and walked three Goldeyes in the seventh after Batista left with two on and one out.

Aaron Hartsock (2-1, 2.11 ERA), in relief of Zach Baldwin who pitched brilliantly for five innings in a spot start, earned the win, while Jamie Vermilyea (2-3 1.79 ERA) pitched two shutout innings to get his 12th save

Monday night, the Goldeyes will open a huge three-game series with the second-place St. Paul Saints. Game time is 7 p.m. and can be heard live with Paul Edmonds on Sports Radio 1290 or seen live on Shaw TV with Scott Taylor, Jamie Bettens and Jim Toth.

"It's going to be a fun week," said Ott. "Throw strike-one early in the count and then go out and score early and often. I can't wait."
