St. Paul Saints News Release

FARGO, ND (August 14, 2011) - There's never a good time to get swept, but with just about two weeks to go in the season and with the St. Paul Saints battling for a playoff spot a three game sweep at the hands of the Fargo Moorhead RedHawks couldn't come at a worse time as they lost 5-3 on Sunday evening at Newman Outdoor Field pushing the Saints two back of the Winnipeg Goldeyes in the division, but they still lead the wild card by one game with 14 to go.

It appeared as though the Saints would do damage as they got off to a good start in the first when Adam Frost led off with a triple and with one out Ole Sheldon singled him home to make it 1-0.

Jake Schmidt, making his first start in over a month after spending that time on the disabled list, gave up a two out double in the bottom of the first to Nic Jackson and then Jesse Hoorelbeke hit a two-run homer to left, his 14th of the season, to give the RedHawks a 2-1 lead.

In the third former Saint Jake Krause led off with a walk and with one out moved to third on a single from C.J. Retherford. Jackson's RBI fielder's choice made it 3-1. Hoorelbeke did damage again with a two out RBI single to make it 4-1. Schmidt would go 6.0 innings allowing four runs on nine hits while walking two and striking out eight.

Sheldon would bring the Saints to within two on a solo shot in the fourth, his ninth of the season.

The RedHawks got an insurance run in the seventh when Retherford collected his third hit of the game, leading off with a single. He moved to second on a ground out and scored on a two out single from Carlo Cota to give the RedHawks a 5-2 lead.

The Saints offense tried to mount a comeback in the ninth when Argelis Nunez led off with a single, extending his hitting streak to 10. With one out Richard Mercado singled him to second. Jonathan Van Every hit a grounder to first and Hoorelbeke forced Mercado at second, but Krause's return throw to first went awry allowing Nunez to score. Steve Mays, however, struck out to end the game.

The Saints now head to Shaw Park for a three game series against the Winnipeg Goldeyes beginning on Monday night at 7:00 p.m. The Saints send LHP Donald Brandt (7-3, 4.25) to the mound against Goldeyes RHP Ace Walker (8-4, 3.40). The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
