Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, Ind. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats fell behind early and could not manage to claw their way back into the contest as they fell to the Shreveport-Bossier Captains by a score of 9-3 Monday evening.
In a game that lasted 3 hours and 46 minutes and despite 10 hits from the offense, the RailCats scratched across just three runs as Alex Kaminsky was excellent on the mound for the visiting Captains. The Wright State righty, who has pitched for two other American Association teams in 2011 (El Paso and Fargo-Moorhead), scattered eight hits over his seven innings of work while striking out seven and walking two in his second victory since joining Shreveport.
A trio of RailCats contributed multi-hit games in the loss with Brad Boyer leading the way with three singles. Chris Carrara and Brian Kolb each had a pair of hits and a stolen base apiece for the 'Cats while outfielder Adam Klein also set the RailCats franchise record for most walks in a single season when he drew his 66th free pass of the year in the eighth inning. The old record of 65 had been previously held by outfielder Steve Haake (2008).
After single tallies in the first and fifth in what had been a tight game early, Shreveport-Bossier blew it open with a four-run sixth inning. Brian Peterson knocked in two with a double, Alex Cowart drove home Peterson with a single and Cowert scored on a Robert Perry single to put the Captains up 6-0.
The RailCats got on the board in the sixth on a two-out RBI single by shortstop Brian Kolb only to see Shreveport get that run right back when Palmer Karr Jr. smacked a solo shot to left in the top of the seventh to make it a 7-1 game. A second run came home in the seventh on another Cowert RBI-single. It became a 9-1 contest in the eighth when Perry scored on a Karr Jr. sacrifice fly.
With bases loaded in the eighth and ninth, the RailCats managed only a pair of single tallies to provide the final score. With the Wichita Wingnuts idle Monday, the RailCats remain 1.5 games in first-place in the Central Division of the American Association with 13 games to play including the growingly important three-game series in Wichita looming this weekend.
Carlos Rivas took the loss for the RailCats after allowing one run in 2.0 innings Monday before leaving with an undisclosed injury. Nolan Nicholson was saddled with five runs (three earned) on six hits over 3.1 innings of relief. James Baker and Chris Little each allowed an earned run inning apiece of relief and Travis Minix, fresh off the disabled list, was the only RailCats hurler who did not allow a run on the night.
The Captains invade the home of the RailCats for the fifth straight day on Tuesday, August 16 for a scheduled 7:10 p.m. contest. RHP Scott Shaw goes for his tenth win of the season for the RailCats, and the University of Illinois alum will be opposed by Captains RHP Osvaldo Rodriguez (5-4, 5.78).
NOTES: RailCats Manager Greg Tagert served a one game suspension Monday, following his ejection in Game One of Sunday's doubleheader against the Captains...Prior to Monday's contest, the RailCats activated RHP Travis Minix from the disabled list and placed INF Kyle Haines on the disabled list retroactive to Thursday, August 15
As part of Tenth Anniversary Tuesday at U. S. Steel Yard, the RailCats welcome former pitcher Jeremy Plexico, 2007 Northern League Pitcher of the Year and a member of the Tenth Anniversary Team Great seats are still available by calling the 'Cats at 219.882.2255 or by visiting www.railcatsbaseball.com.
