St. Paul Saints News Release

WINNIPEG, MB (August 16, 2011) - The games remaining are dwindling and the deficit in the North Division is growing as the St. Paul Saints lost their season high fifth straight game 4-3 to the Winnipeg Goldeyes on Tuesday night at Shaw Park and are now a season high four games behind the Goldeyes with 12 games to go. They still lead the Wild Card by 0.5 game over the Wichita Wingnuts, who have 13 games left.

The night started on a positive note as the Saints exploded for three runs in the first inning as Ole Sheldon hit a solo homer to left, his 10th of the season, to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. Jason Cooper followed with a double and Richard Mercado made it 3-0 with a two-run shot to center, his seventh of the season. Ronnie Bourquin added a double, but was left stranded. The four hits in the first inning would be two more than they would get over the final eight innings.

In the bottom of the first Saints starter Kyle Carr, working on two days rest after throwing 3.2 innings of relief on Saturday, but had to start because of the injury to Edwin Walker, walked Price Kendall to lead off the game. With two outs Brian Myrow walked and then Wes Long drilled a three-run homer to left, his ninth of the season, to tie the game at three.

In the second the Goldeyes would score the final run of the game. Carr walked the bases loaded and with one out Kody Kaiser singled to left scoring Louis Ott. Carr lasted 4.0 innings allowing four runs on three hits while walking seven and striking out one.

The offense, however, couldn't help out the pitching staff. They managed just a two out single by Donald Blunt and a lead off single by Adam Frost in the fifth, but got just one man in scoring position after the first, which was Ronnie Bourquin after Blunt's single in the fourth.

The Saints bullpen did all they could with Kyle Foster, Caleb Thielbar and Tyler Walker pitching 4.0 scoreless innings allowing three hits and striking out three. For Foster and Thielbar it was their 43rd appearances each, tying the single season franchise record set by Jon Plefka (2010) and Chris Chavez (2003 & 2004).

The same two teams meet in the finale of the three game series on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. The Saints send RHP Matt Long (6-9, 5.68) to the mound against Goldeyes LHP Luis Villarreal (5-3, 4.02). The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
