Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
LINCOLN, Neb. - The Lincoln Saltdogs handed the Sioux Falls Pheasants a 13-6 loss on Tuesday night at Haymarket Park in Lincoln to take the first game of a three-game series.
Lincoln never trailed after tallying three runs in the second inning. Against Pheasants starter Chris Salberg (3-8), the Saltdogs loaded the bases on a single and two. A run crossed when the next batter, Pat Trettel, reached on an error. A double play brought home the second run, and Vance Albitz singled home the third.
After Lincoln notched a run in the third inning, the Pheasants got on the board with Mark Shorey's two-out, RBI single.
Lincoln blew open the game with an eight-run fifth inning to extend the lead to 12-1. The Saltdogs batted around before the first out was recorded. They tallied seven hits in the inning, including Trettel's two-run home run and Kurt Steinhauer's two-run double.
The Pheasants scored a pair of runs in the sixth on back-to-back singles from Brandon Sing and Francisco Leandro. In the eighth, Sing launched his league-best 23rd home run of the year to center field, a two-run blast. Sing finished 2-for-4 with three RBI. He has feasted on Lincoln pitching this season, hitting .500 with six home runs.
Gus Milner's solo home run in the ninth extended a team-best and season-best hitting streak to 14 with his fifth home run of the year.
Former Sioux Falls pitcher Jino Gonzalez (5-0) earned the win with six innings tossed. He allowed three runs, one earned, on seven hits.
Salberg lost for the first time since returning to the starting rotation. He was touched for 11 runs, nine earned, in four-plus innings.
The Pheasants lost their third straight game and dropped their record to 40-46.
Game two of the three-game series continues at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday, August 19. Ben Moore is slated to start for Sioux Falls. Moore needs two strikeouts to break his own single-season league strikeout record set last year (126). The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM and www.kwsn.com.
