Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

GARY, In.---Shreveport-Bossier hit three home runs off Gary starter Scott Shaw (W, 10-4) but it wasn't enough as the RailCats defeated the Captains 10-7 thanks to a five-hit night by second baseman Brad Boyer.

Boyer tied a team record by going 5-for-5. He had three runs scored and a pair of RBIs to go along with his five base hits. Boyer is now 12-for-20 in the series against the Captains.

Palmer Karr Jr. and Andres Rodriguez both hit their team-leading 12th home runs in the fourth inning off Shaw. Rodriguez's homer put the Captains up 5-4. In the last of the fourth, Gary took the lead 7-5. Chris Carrara tied the game with an RBI groundout scoring Craig Maddox. A Christian Guerrero double gave the RailCats the lead. They would add another run when Boyer scored on an Osvaldo Rodriguez wild pitch.

Rodriguez (L, 5-6) allowed 13 hits and nine runs in five innings. He walked one and struck out three in his first road appearance in more than a month.

The game's turning point would come in the fifth. Mike Provencher led off the inning with his ninth home run of the year. Robert Perry, who had his second straight three-hit game, doubled and took third when Karr reached on an error by Gary first baseman Mike Rohde. With the score 7-6 and runners on the corners with one out, Chad Gabriel hit a ground ball to second. Boyer tossed to short for the fielder's choice and Karr was charged with runner's interference on shortstop Brian Kolb to end the inning.

The RailCats would pull away with three runs in the sixth on a Boyer RBI base hit and a two-run double by Toddric Johnson.

Shreveport-Bossier added a run in the eighth when Scott Thomas' two-out single scored Gabriel. However, in the ninth closer Travis Minnix threw a scoreless inning to pick up his eighth save and first since returning from the disabled list.

Gabriel went 2-for-3 with a double and three runs scored in the loss. Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs. Thomas added two hits in four at bats with two RBIs. For Gary, Johnson was 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Maddox went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. He hit his first home run of the year to put the RailCats on the board in the second inning.

Shreveport-Bossier falls to 40-47 on the year with the loss, still 7.5 behind St. Paul in the wild card race with 13 left to play.
