Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, Ind. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats welcome back record-setting closer Andy Shipman to Northwest Indiana and the hard-throwing righty will be accompanied by left-handed starting pitcher Trent Lare in a trade with the Kansas City T-Bones the club announced today.
The RailCats receive Shipman and Lare from the T-Bones in exchange for a pair of relief pitchers in Brian Grening and Chris Little, as well as cash considerations. At the time of the trade, Shipman was listed on the Kansas City Disabled List retroactive to August 9 and as such, will begin on the DL for the RailCats.
Shipman, 29, was named 2009 Relief Pitcher of the Year (Northern) and is the RailCats career leader in saves (34) and games finished (68). The Warrensburg, Mo. native earned an 8-5 record with a 2.44 ERA over 85.0 innings racking up 77 strikeouts and walking only 23 in 77 career outings as a member of the RailCats. Shipman was named a Northern League Mid-Season All-Star in both seasons with the RailCats and led the Northern League in saves in 2010 (21). Shipman will be a welcome addition to an already stout RailCats bullpen, bringing a wealth of experience having pitched in a number of big games the last two seasons with the 'Cats.
Lare, 26, comes to the RailCats with quite a bit of professional experience in both the Independent and affiliated minor leagues. Lare began his professional career in the Frontier League with Kalamazoo before having his contract purchased by the New York Yankees following the 2008 season where he posted a 2.24 ERA in four stops in 2009 advancing as Single-A Advanced Tampa in the Florida state League. After a solid 2010 campaign at Tampa where the lefty posted a 4.00 ERA in 74.1 innings, Lare rejoined the Independent ranks beginning the 2011 season with the division-rival Wichita Wingnuts before being traded to the T-Bones for a player to be named later on June 4.
The RailCats take on the Shreveport-Bossier Captains Wednesday at 7:10 p.m. with world-renowned competitive-eating champion Takeru Kobayashi on hand to challenge several RailCats fans to a hamburger-eating contest. Call the 'Cats at 219.882.2255 or visit www.railcatsbaseball.com to reserve your spot for this once in a lifetime experience!
