Lincoln Saltdogs News Release
LINCOLN - The Saltdogs piled on eight runs in the fifth en route to a 13-6 series-opening win over the Sioux Falls Fighting Pheasants in front of 3,903 fans at Haymarket Park Tuesday night.
Pat Trettel blasted a two-run homer and Kurt Steinhauer added a two-run double in the seven-hit, eight-run fifth frame, the most potent offensive inning of 2011 for Lincoln.
The 'Dogs led 12-1 after the fifth-inning outburst, and Steinhauer bombed a solo home run in the sixth to make it 13-3.
Jino Gonzalez (5-0) pitched six innings, allowing two earned on seven hits while striking out six and walking one to earn the victory. Chris Salberg (3-8) went four-plus, allowing 11 runs - eight earned - on 10 hits while walking six and fanning two to take the loss.
Jorge Cortes went 3-for-4 with two hits and six Saltdogs batters booked multi-hit nights in a 15-hit team effort.
Wes Smith made his professional debut as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning, grounding out to first on an emergency swing. Smith just signed on to the active roster earlier Tuesday.
With the victory the Saltdogs move into a tie for third in the Central and are now just 2 1/2 games behind the wildcard-leading St. Paul Saints.
