American Association Game Recaps
August 16, 2011 - American Association (AA) News Release
Fort Worth 10, Grand Prairie 3
The Cats got a two-run homer from C Kelley Gulledge in the bottom of the first inning of their 10-3 win against Grand Prairie. Gulledge, who didn't register another hit in the contest, is batting .318 on the season. Fort Worth led by as many as 10 runs before the AirHogs put three runs on the scoreboard in the ninth to thwart the shutout. Starting Fort Worth pitcher Wade Mackey threw the first seven innings and struck out three batters while shutting out Grand Prairie on only four hits. The win lowered Mackey's ERA to 4.36.
Fargo-Moorhead 14, Sioux City 5
The top of the RedHawks lineup was red hot Tuesday night. Fargo-Moorhead's Nos. 1 through 4 hitters went a combined 8-for-19 with seven runs and 10 RBI in their club's 14-5 win over Sioux City. Leadoff SS Zach Penprase and two-hole-hitting 3B C.J. Retherford opened the bottom of the first inning with back-to-back home runs to get the show started. Penprase and Retherford had two hits with three runs and two RBI in the contest. But the offensive onslaught wasn't limited to Penprase and Retherford. Three different RedHawks had three hits, led by 1B Jesse Hoorelbeke, who went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.
Gary SouthShore 10, Shreveport-Bossier 7
The RailCats and Captains went back and forth Tuesday night, with Gary SouthShore taking the lead for good in the fourth en route to a 10-7 win. RailCats 2B Brad Boyer went a perfect 5-for-5 with three runs and two RBI, with C Craig Maddox hitting the club's only home run to highlight his 2-for-3 night. The Captains took a 2-0 lead in the second on back-to-back singles from Brian Peterson and Scott Thomas. By the end of the fourth, however, the RailCats had taken a 7-5 lead that they would not surrender. The Captains got three home runs in the contest, one each from Mike Provencher, Palmer Karr Jr. and Andres Rodriguez. Karr Jr. and Rodriguez both have 12 homers on the season.
Winnipeg 4, St. Paul 3
The Saints and Goldeyes got the scoring out of the way early, with Winnipeg leading, 4-3, after only two innings. That count wound up being the final score. All but one of the game's runs came via the long ball, as Goldeyes SS Wes Long hit a three-run blast in the bottom of the first to answer two homers from St. Paul in the top of the frame. Long went 2-for-3 on the night, with his three RBI and run scored all coming on his first-inning blast. Goldeyes RF Kody Kaiser broke the tie in the bottom of the first, singling in Louis Ott. That was one of Kaiser's two hits. Saints 1B Richard Mercado hit one of the first-inning home runs, a two-run shot, for his only hit of the night.
Lincoln 13, Sioux Falls 6
The Saltdogs scored eight runs in the fifth inning - more runs than their opponents scored in all nine - to speed to a 13-6 win over Sioux Falls. Saltdogs leadoff CF Kurt Steinhauer and C Pat Trettel each hit home runs, and Steinhauer - who went 2-for-6 on the night - added a two-run double in the big fifth inning. Trettel hit a two-run homer in the frame. Sioux Falls 3B Brandon Sing hit a two-run blast in the eighth, putting an exclamation point on his 2-for-4, three-RBI night. But it was too little, too late for the Pheasants, as the game had been in hand for Lincoln since the fifth.
Kansas City 3, Wichita 2
T-Bones 1B Jim Fasano had just one hit against Wichita on Tuesday. But his timing couldn't have been better. With his Kansas City club trailing, 2-1, in the top of the eighth, Fasano rocketed a two-run blast to score himself and 2B Justin Snyder. The home run gave the T-Bones a 3-2 lead that reliever Kyle Dahman held onto for a victory. Dahman pitched the final inning and two-thirds and surrendered just one hit to earn his sixth save of the season. Wichita came back from an early 1-0 deficit to take the lead in the seventh on a Jimmy Mojica sacrifice fly. But that score was all but voided with Fasano's homer in the next inning.
Amarillo 10, El Paso 8
After watching the Sox score four runs in the ninth and turn a 7-6 deficit into a 10-7 lead, El Paso twice put the tying run on the plate in the bottom of the inning. But the Diablos couldn't complete the comeback and fell, 10-8. Amarillo's four-run ninth saw six of the team's first seven batters reach base safely, with CF Josh Banda singling in the first two runs to give the Sox an 8-7 lead. Banda went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI in the game. Diablos LF Brian Joynt scored 2B Uriak Marquez on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth. But one batter later, Sox reliever Chad Povich struck out Kory Drew to seal the Amarillo victory. Povich threw one and two-thirds innings and allowed one run on three hits with a strikeout.
