Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

Eastlake, OH.- Behind the stellar pitching efforts of Nathan Nery, Cliff Flagello, and Mick Mattaliano, the Shorebirds limited Lake County to just two hits in Delmarva's 3-1 victory on Monday night at Classic Park. A first inning single and a third inning double were the only base knocks for the Captains throughout the ballgame. Offensively, the Shorebirds were led by their eight and nine hitters, as Pedro Florimon and Matt Angle each reached base three times. Florimon broke out of his hitting slump with two doubles, scoring an insurance run in the seventh on Jason White's sacrifice fly. And Angle scored the go-ahead run in the second inning following the first of his pair of singles. In his second start of the season, Nery struggled in the first inning but quickly found his form. In five innings, the young lefthander held the Captains to just one run on two hits. He gave way to Flagello in the sixth, and Flagello proceeded to mow down the Captains for three hitless innings. When Mattaliano finished a perfect ninth inning, the Shorebirds had the victory in their grasp. Mattaliano, the Shorebirds submarine closer, has not allowed an earned run since April 23, and has now pitched 18 and two-third innings without an earned run against him. His one-two-three inning Monday night lowered his season ERA to a minuscule 1.05.
