BlueClaws win pitcher's duel

Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release

HAGERSTOWN, Md. - Darren Byrd overcame both thunderstorms and the Hagerstown Suns on Monday night, as the right-hander helped the BlueClaws to a 2-0 win at Municipal Stadium.

Byrd (1-1) allowed just two hits in six innings, striking out four without allowing a run. He did it all in a consistent downpour that featured thunder, lightning and even hail. Byrd was forced to depart following a 35-minute rain delay in the top of the seventh inning. Byrd's counterpart, Erik Arnesen, matched him almost pitch for pitch until the sixth inning, when the

BlueClaws broke through for their first run of the game, which proved to be the game winner. Arnesen (6-2), the Suns leader in wins, had given up just one hit and one walk heading into the sixth. But the right-hander allowed hits to both Freddy Galvis and Derrick Mitchell in the top of the sixth inning, setting up a Dennis Winn sacrifice fly.

Lakewood tacked on some insurance in the seventh inning. Travis Mattair was the first hitter following the lengthy delay and he singled in Mike Durant from second base to make it a two-run BlueClaws lead. Lakewood actually managed four hits in the inning, but rightfielder Michael Burgess threw out both Galvis and Jay Miller trying to stretch singles into doubles.

Sergio Escalona provided some relief for Byrd after the starter exited the ballgame. Escalona did not allow a hit in 1 2/3 innings to maintain the BlueClaws advantage. Jared Simon picked up the final four outs for his 11th save of the season.

Hagerstown gave Simon a scare with two hits in the ninth inning, including an RBI single off the bat of Sean Rooney. Durant then failed to handle a groundball from Tim Pahuta to put runners at the corners, but Simon got Mark Gildea to fly out to end the ballgame.

The save was some revenge for Simon, who gave up four runs in the ninth inning in a walk-off Suns win at Municipal Stadium on June 10.

It also gave the BlueClaws the advantage, at least for the time being, in the season series with the Suns. Lakewood has won seven of 13 closely contested games against Hagerstown this season.

The BlueClaws will return to the field Thursday at 7:05 p.m. with Julian Sampson (4-1) taking the mound for Lakewood. Former first rounder Colton Willems (5-4) will make the start for the Suns (3-2, 37-37).
