Augusta, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets (41-28, 3-2) came away with an 8-3 win over the Asheville Tourists (46-24, 2-3) on Monday night to win the five game series taking three of the games. Starter T.J. Brewer worked a career best seven innings and Augusta used a four run third inning for the win.
With the bases loaded and no outs Thomas Neal reached on a fielding error from shortstop Everth Cabrera which allowed two runs to score. Garrett Baker then scored from third when Asheville starter Cory Riordan tried to pick off Neal at first and threw the ball in the dirt and past first baseman Jeffrey Cunningham. Jackson Williams capped off the scoring with a two-out RBI double to put Augusta up 4-0.
Brewer (6-4) allowed one run on four hits, one walk and struck out four. The one run that scored was a solo home run by Darin Holcomb to lead off the seventh to break up the shutout and put the score at 5-1, Augusta at that point.
David Mixon pitched the eighth inning and allowed two unearned runs on one hits, one walk and three strikeouts. Waldis Joaquin worked a perfect ninth for Augusta recording on strikeout.
The GreenJackets got a single run in the fourth inning on an RBI single from Garrett Baker for a 5-0 lead.
Augusta added three more runs in the seventh inning for an 8-1 lead. Brock Bond connected for an RBI single up the middle and on the play Bond made it to third on a two base throwing error from David Christensen. Bond then scored on a wild pitch from reliever Robinson Fabian. Shane Jordan capped off the Augusta scoring with an RBI ground out.
The GreenJackets continue their eight game home stand with the Boston Red Sox affiliate coming to town on Tuesday, the Greenville Drive. Augusta and Greenville will begin a three game series with right-hander Chance Corgan (0-2, 4.70) taking the hill for the GreenJackets. The Drive counter with lefty Jose Capellan (1-0, 5.54). First pitch on Tuesday is at 7:05 p.m.
